On Wednesday morning I journeyed into Marylebone for a breakfast meeting with Richard Harpin & Business Leader on behalf of Sport for Confidence CIC. It was a really empowering, insightful and enjoyable couple of hours listening, storytelling, learning and being curious. As a co-founder in this more 'socially conscious' business, I found myself in slightly alien territory alongside some brilliant humans who are scaling and growing businesses in digital, property, talent, exec search, energy and gift cards. However, the journey to growing any business is often similar, and Richard shared his 8 (+1) lessons with us with practical lived experiences which included some failures, as well as references to other leaders whom he has worked with, learnt from, and grown alongside (made me smile seeing James Watt on the deck!). So I left the session perhaps more confused and definitely more curious, not about what I had heard, but more about what to do next. Why? Because what we do at SfC is really quite simple (and replicable) - placing an OT and a Sports Coach into a leisure centre. It's proven, it's scalable, it's measurable, it's needed, it's topical etc. We currently 'only' do it in one County of England (plus 3 London boroughs), so the market potential is huge. The insight tells us it's needed. The policy directives all point towards things like what we do being the right way - prevention not cure, co-produced, cross-sector, super-professional, systems-led, place-based. I'm still feeling there's too many what ifs, egos, logos and buts.... So let's see what happens next to help myself, Lyndsey, Dan and Jake (and our NEDs) unpick the next chapter...and hopefully alongside the team at Business Leader
Turn ambition into action. It’s tough to be a business leader — with an equal need to balance bold ambitions with limited resources, lead your team through uncertainty AND find the time to focus on strategy while handling the daily grind, we know you have a lot on your plate. But here’s the good news: you’re not alone. That’s why we invite growth-minded, mid-sized business leaders to our weekly Growth Workshops. So you can see for yourself. When you’re in a room with your peers, the floor is open for you to: 🗣️ Exchange insights with like-minded individuals 💡 Learn from one another’s successes 💪 Find the encouragement to confidently tackle the next phase of growth And there’s no one better to lead these workshops than a businessman who’s been there and done it – our host Richard Harpin. A huge thank you to everyone who attended this week. Your willingness to engage, learn and share openly is a testament to what can happen when we get the conversations started and begin to build community.
