UK Research and Innovation is the largest single funder of doctoral research in the UK, which means that UKRI’s minimum stipend - money paid to students to cover their living costs - has an important influence on the wider doctoral funding landscape. In March 2024, UKRI commissioned SQW, in partnership with London Economics Ltd, to undertake a study to provide UKRI with evidence to inform decisions about setting the stipend level. The study sought to understand how minimum stipend levels affect studentship recruitment and retention. South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has appointed SQW as its evaluator, to support the development of the Safe Space to Sleep Programme. This programme is receiving around £2 million in investment by SYMCA and aims to reduce child poverty in South Yorkshire by supporting local Voluntary and Community Sector partners to provide beds and bedding to families with children aged 5 and under, and by funding four ‘test and learn’ pilots to develop approaches that connect families with other services, build trust amongst communities and improve outcomes for children. SQW is working collaboratively with SYMCA and local stakeholders to conduct an independent formative, process and impact evaluation of the Safe Space to Sleep programme. If you’d like to talk to us about this research, please contact Lauren Roberts. Visit our website to find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eMyBmsa9

Data centres are increasingly recognised as crucial to AI development and the economy’s wider digital transformation. Accelerating the building of data centres though new “AI Growth Zones” was a key recommendation of the AI Opportunities Action Plan. This also contained an intriguing reference to using these zones to “drive local rejuvenation.” Our latest blog by Donald Ross explores how this might work 👉 https://lnkd.in/eP5XNjHu

✍ As #NationalProductivityWeek draws to a close, our latest blog sees SQW’s Joe Duggett reflect on the UK’s productivity policy landscape and prospects for the future, including: - The role of productivity at the centre of the economic policy agenda. - The importance of the diffusion and adoption of new technologies and growth-driving sectors in driving-up productivity. - Complementary policy agendas that have the potential to help ‘move the needle’ on spatial disparities in productivity performance. 📢 SQW is delighted to see the publication of a recent study for West Midlands Combined Authority. In completing the project, we worked closely with Alasdair Rae and City-REDI, University of Birmingham. The purpose of the project was to examine evidence relating to economic geographies across the West Midlands. We reviewed key socio-economic datasets to understand commuting, migration, travel and spending flows across the region. This relied on data from the latest Census, and also from 2011 (given the impact of the pandemic). We also used new data published by the ONS, to understand consumer spending patterns. Our work examined how functional geographies might evolve in the future. This was informed by a consideration of the ‘megatrends’ that are shaping the way people live and work. A joint blog about the study is available here, which includes a link to the main report 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4hGw5zP Map credits: Alasdair Rae
