We’ve published details of our half year results showing a strong performance including investing £1.3bn in clean power infrastructure and earnings in line with expectations. Our Chief Executive Alistair Phillips-Davies has also announced his intention to retire from SSE during 2025 after 27 years with the group and 11 years as Chief Executive. Read the results:

SSE Thermal recently attended the annual Carbon Capture and Storage Association conference where we gave our perspective on the UK Government’s #cleanpower mission and carbon capture’s essential role in delivering it. Our Director of Business Development, Hannah Bronwin, welcomed the recent government backing of CCS and outlined how integral the technology will be in providing the low-carbon flexible power needed to meet rising electricity demand into the 2030s #CCUS2024Conference

This week, we attended the annual graduate career event at Sheffield University. We engaged with students interested in building successful careers in the energy sector, discussing Thermal’s plans for decarbonisation and the exploration of emerging technologies. A huge thank you from SSE Thermal! On September 5th, SSE Thermal, with your support, completed their Big Walk, raising more than £20,000 for Marie Curie! Marc Rudd, SSE Thermal Director of Engineering and Asset Management, said: "A huge thank you to our corporate sponsors, for this amazing effort. "Collaborating with you all on our low carbon, net zero vision is important enough, but this walk shows us that when we work together, we can also make a difference in our communities and the lives of people affected by terminal illness, and the affects it has on their loved ones. "And to all the SSE Thermal team who put in the miles on this, thank you, you are all amazing!"

Last week, our managing director Finlay McCutcheon welcomed our new intake of graduates. An induction event took place in Glasgow, where our 16 new graduates immersed themselves in a day of learning, networking and gaining exposure to SSE plc’s vital role in delivering net zero. Welcome to SSE Thermal! 

Commenting on the launch of the first #carboncapture sites in the UK, our Managing Director Finlay McCutcheon said: “Deploying new low-carbon power stations is mission critical as we move towards a clean power system. Today’s announcement marks an important milestone and we must ensure this momentum is built on with pace and purpose. "Carbon capture is essential to our net zero ambitions with power CCS and hydrogen-to-power projects capable of providing crucial low-carbon flexible capacity. But delivering on its promise requires a rapid acceleration of additional projects within Track 1 and Track 2 clusters, with a particular focus on Scotland and the Humber. "Now, Government and industry must work together to capture the moment and deliver these vital projects, which in turn can help to keep the lights on, support wider decarbonisation and unlock a clean power future for the UK.”

Our Keadby site plays a significant role for the wider UK energy system and has done since the early 1950s.    Originally a coal fired power plant, the site is now home to Europe's most efficient gas power station.    With further plans to develop carbon capture and storage technology, and the potential for the world’s first 100% hydrogen fuelled power station, the site highlights our overwhelming commitment towards net zero targets.
