Stonework is timeless, yet adapting to modern standards ensures its relevance and functionality for the future. Our recently featured, Grade I listed, award-winning project showcases both traditional craftsmanship alongside design for thermal control. We integrated thermal breaks into the stone components; these breaks prevent thermal bridging and avoids the risk of condensation to the inside of the building. In our design of these breaks, we adopt special insulation that matches the compressible strength of the stone itself. The inner and outer stone layers are securely bonded together using resin-fixed basalt dowels (non-ferrous dowels are used to prevent cold-bridging through the dowels themselves). The window assembly is a structural system, including transoms detailed to transmit wind loads back to the main load carrying mullions. This method not only met modern thermal performance standards but also preserved the original Lutyens-style batted finishes, ensuring the building’s heritage features remained intact. Congratulations to ‘Grass Forms’ created by Hugo Dalton which has been Highly Commended in the 2024 ‘Art in Stone’ category in the Natural Stone Awards organised by the Stone Federation Great Britain As longterm collaborators with Dalton, we felt this project offered the ideal ‘blank canvas’ for art & architecture. And an opportunity to enhance this new building’s civic presence. An imposing large-scale commission for Native Land for the façade of OneThreeSix, a mixed use scheme we completed in 2021, on London’s Edgware Road. Dalton’s limestone sculptural relief is embedded into the front of the building. Inspiration came from the long swaying grasses in nearby Hyde Park and provides a pocket of calm in the frenetic life of the city. Rhodes House brings home the Natural Stone Award 2024 (Interiors category)! 🏆 The solid stone spiral staircase has been resognised for its impressive and most structurally challenging craftsmanship, connecting the ground level to the new conference centre on the lower floors. Suspended within the existing arches by a compression ring, the staircase is held together by three tensioned steel cables.
