The Genomics Nation by BioIndustry Association, Medicines Discovery Catapult & Wellcome Sanger Institute was a benchmark of the potential of the UK genomics sector - the UK genomics has strong roots in genomics from James Watson and Francis Crick discovering the double helix structure of DNA in 1953 to the 100,000 Genomes Project by Genomics England in 2018. Made up of 154 companies, 5119 employees and valued at over £5bn - the UK genomics sector has raised £3.3bn in private investments, £151m in public R&D grants, and £2bn in IPOs since 2011. By 2040, it is projected to grow from £5bn+ to £50bn+. As part of the NHS Long Term Plan to utilise genomic testing to quickly diagnose rare diseases, whole exome sequencing is offered to critically ill babies and children. By 2025, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service aims to integrate genomic medicine into routine care. StoreGene is a spinout company from the University College London, contributing to the 39% of genomics companies that represent 'spinout companies'. Alongside which, 81% has raised equity investment, 54% received large grants, and 11% exited (IPO or acquisition). Interestingly, genomic companies have the strongest foothold in the East of England, London and the South East - making up 72% of the UK's genomic 'ecosystem'. It is worth noting that the potential of genomics stretches further than medicine - world issues like food security and protecting the biodiversity of the environment also benefits from advances in genomics to bring us closer to a healthy, sustainable world. 🌍Introducing ‘The Global Genome Project’: Advancing Equity in Genomics! 🌍 We’re thrilled to host our South Korean collaborators, #TSCellBio, in London last week as we take major steps toward launching The Global Genome project. 🧬 This pioneering initiative focuses on the clinical evaluation of our Whole Genome Sequencing analyses in diverse ancestries, bringing together experts from the UK and South Korea to improve the equity and accuracy of genomic testing worldwide. 📅On Tuesday, we hosted a networking breakfast nearby The Francis Crick Institute with the support of KQ Labs to soft-launch The Global Genome project. We’re proud to announce that we’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding with our South Korean partners, #TSCellBio. ✍🤝 Together, we’ll deliver The Global Genome project, a two-year effort to validate StoreGene’s Clinical Genomic Operating System (CGOS) and cardiovascular TARGeTs on 200 Korean genomic samples. 🔬 🚨Next steps is to officially launch The Global Genome Project in late January 2025 - stay tuned! 🚨 This partnership demonstrates our commitment to advancing genomic science, fostering international collaboration, and improving health equity through diverse genomic research. 📢 WHO’s New Framework on Genomic Data Collection, Access, Use and Sharing 📢 Just last week, the World Health Organization launched a new framework outlining globally applicable principles for the ethical, legal, and equitable use of human genome data. This initiative is a call for global collaboration, aiming to foster transparency, ethical stewardship, safeguarding rights, and equity in genomics, ensuring the benefits of genomic analysis reaches everyone, regardless of their background or location. 🌎 🤝 🧬 At StoreGene, we are fully aligned with this mission, and are actively integrating principles recommended by WHO into our daily operations, such as the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) and Collective Benefit Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics (CARE) principles.
