  • The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, published this week, offers a valuable framework for reshaping the UK’s energy system to achieve our decarbonisation goals. Alongside prioritising solutions for grid constraints, establishing regional power hubs, and expanding onshore wind to boost renewable generation, the plan emphasises the importance of grid flexibility. A flexible energy system is crucial for integrating clean power and maintaining grid stability, even during periods of low renewable generation. The Action Plan estimates that Britain will require 40-50 GW of dispatchable, long-duration capacity by 2030. Long-duration energy storage will play a vital role in achieving grid flexibility by storing massive amounts of renewable energy and releasing it when needed. This capability not only balances supply and demand but also reduces reliance on fossil fuels, all while minimising the risk of blackouts. The expansion of long-duration energy storage capacity will be further supported by the deployment of battery energy storage systems. 🔋 We are encouraged by the plan’s focus on addressing grid constraints, which have long hindered the deployment of clean energy infrastructure. Unlocking grid connections for clean energy solutions is a necessary step to ensure that the energy transition remains on track. The plan also aims to expand the UK’s onshore wind capacity by streamlining planning processes and developing regional power hubs. This approach aligns with Labour’s broader strategy of decentralising energy generation to address regional supply challenges. The plan outlines ambitions for 43-50 GW of offshore wind and 27-29 GW of onshore wind by 2030. This will allow the UK to harness its wind resources to ensure a cost-effective supply of clean energy as demand for renewable power increases. ⚡️ The plan’s focus on establishing regional power hubs, particularly in areas like Teesside, is a welcome development. As a key centre for clean energy innovation and the site of Britain’s first CCUS plant, Teesside is well-positioned to drive decarbonisation progress forward. As the energy transition accelerates, collaboration between policymakers, industry, and local communities will be key. By prioritising grid flexibility and addressing systemic barriers, this plan lays the groundwork for achieving Britain’s 2030 goals. Storelectric is dedicated to advancing green energy storage solutions that enhance grid flexibility and enable clean power to be delivered economically at scale. Published at the end of November, the Drax Group Q3 Electric Insights report celebrates a significant moment for Britain’s energy transition. In 2024, fossil fuel energy generation fell below 5GW for the first time, with carbon intensity reaching a record low of 78g/kWh. This underlines the incredible progress made this year in decarbonising Britain’s grid. ⚡️ However, we still have a long way to go. The Drax Q3 report projects that wasted energy due to curtailment is likely to reach 5 TWh in 2024, tripling until 2030, at a cost of nearly £1 billion annually. Addressing this issue requires a reform of Britain’s energy transmission infrastructure and, critically, investment in long-duration energy storage (LDES). As Iain Staffell, lead author of the Drax Electric Insights series, noted: “If we continue to reduce our dependence on gas by prioritising wind and solar, they will need support from other technologies like long-duration energy storage...” Energy storage, like Storelectric’s LDES solutions, enables renewables to securely power the grid. LDES stores massive amounts of surplus renewable energy, produced during generation peaks (such as the recent high winds of Storm Bert!) and dispatches it when needed. This capability could phase out Britain’s reliance on natural gas for grid stability, accelerating the transition to renewables. We are closer than ever to a cleaner, greener grid – now is the time to deploy the infrastructure needed to build on the decarbonisation success of 2024. • With COP29 wrapping up last week, we’re reflecting on some of the key pledges that emerged from the conference. A standout moment was Energy Day, which introduced three major energy commitments: ⚡️ The Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge ⚡️ The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge ⚡️ The Hydrogen Declaration The Energy Day pledges align with Storelectric’s mission to deliver large-scale energy storage and green hydrogen production solutions. Here’s how our technologies could support these goals: ➡️ The Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge aims to drive investment, modernise energy infrastructure, and enhance regional cooperation. Storelectric’s CAES technologies directly contribute to these objectives by repurposing salt caverns historically used for natural gas storage, stabilising renewable energy supplies, and strengthening grid resilience. Our projects are ready to integrate with clean energy developers to support green re-industrialisation hubs like Teesside. ➡️ The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge sets an ambitious target to increase global energy storage capacity to 1,500 GW by 2030. Storelectric’s long-duration storage solutions are well-suited to support this goal. Our proven compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology offers a secure, reliable way to balance the grid as renewable energy deployment scales up both nationally and internationally. ➡️ The Hydrogen Declaration positions green hydrogen production and storage as a key element of the energy transition. Storelectric’s globally patented technology leverages the heat of compression from CAES to catalyse electrolysis, producing large volumes of cost-effective green hydrogen. Our technology also ensures this hydrogen can be stored safely at optimal pressure, providing a seamless, integrated solution for the hydrogen economy. Together, these pledges outline a bold vision for the future of energy, a vision that Storelectric is well positioned to help realise. By turning these commitments into tangible actions, nations can begin to build resilient energy systems without relying on fossil fuels, steering the international energy market towards a greener future. #COP29 #EnergyStorage #EnergyDay #EnergyPledge #LDES #EnablingRenewables

  • The National Energy System Operator (NESO) Clean Power 2030 report, published earlier this month, offers a roadmap for Britain’s journey towards its 2030 energy goals. Part of this vision is a projected scale-up in the UK’s energy storage capacity. ⚡️ According to the report, Britain’s grid-connected battery storage capacity needs to increase from 5 GW in 2023 to between 23 and 27 GW by 2030. By the same year, long-duration energy storage (LDES) capacity is projected to rise from 28 GWh to 81–99 GWh. Clean Power 2030 outlines the role of LDES technologies, such as compressed air energy storage and pumped hydro, in providing long-term grid flexibility. These systems reduce curtailment costs and lower reliance on fossil fuels by storing large quantities of renewable energy that is dispatchable when needed. This is crucial for maintaining grid stability and protecting the energy system against power disruptions. Storage enables a green, balanced grid, capable of adapting to fluctuations in supply and demand. 🔋 NESO’s advice emphasises that in order to achieve clean power by 2030, urgent reforms are required across the energy system. Alongside deploying a diverse energy storage framework, combining short-duration storage like batteries, with long-duration options like LDES, the report stresses the need to overhaul Britain’s grid connection process. Currently, grid connection delays and planning restrictions are significant barriers to achieving net zero. Timely grid connections remain one of the biggest challenges for the rollout of renewables. At present, over 200 GW of clean energy projects are stalled, waiting in the connections queue, which is far more than required to meet Britain’s 2030 targets! It’s clear the system needs to see change, and quickly, to avoid jeopardising the progress of the energy transition. NESO’s proposed ‘first ready and needed, first connected’ approach is a move in the right direction. By prioritising projects with secured land rights, planning permissions, and an alignment with the Clean Power 2030 pathways, this framework will fast-track the most impactful projects. 💡 At Storelectric, we welcome these reforms and their potential to unlock clean energy projects. An efficient grid connection process is essential to deploying an energy system capable of supporting a secure, low-carbon future. Reforming the connection process will ensure vital projects, such as Storelectric’s energy storage solutions, can progress without unnecessary delays and actively contribute to Britain’s transition to green energy. 🌱 Read NESO’s Clean Power 2030 Report here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eVSqsxMf #NESO #CleanPower2030 #EnablingRenewables #LDES #EnergyStorage #GridConnectionReform
