Our collaboration entitled “𝘈 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯, 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮” involved radical rethinking to help build the capability to deliver better approaches to workforce planning and management. STRASYS worked with the Trust to develop a radical approach and solutions to people planning through a combination of deep analytics, innovative design and coaching. The Thinking Differently Newsletter Healthcare has never mattered more but has also never been under greater strain. In the UK and globally. The strain comes from within healthcare (supply side): escalating costs, insufficient workforce, and trying to meet regulator demands. The strain also comes from the population (demand side): living longer, living with more diseases, expecting more, expecting it now, in an increasingly hard-to-afford and uncertain world. Whilst advances in science and medicine mean we can do more for more people, the decline in the health of growing cohorts of populations, from mental health to the diseases of obesity and the illnesses of growing inequalities, means how we organised healthcare resources in the 20th century is no longer working for the 21st. Technology and AI offer solutions but also introduce new challenges. How many “magic bullets” before we acknowledge that magic isn’t real? The greatest benefit that comes from the oceans of #data is how we shape it, how we analyse it, and how we bring the many sciences carried in human brains together to understand and shape a better future. Professor Sir Muir Gray takes a wider view of the idea of productivity. In his LinkedIn post, Muir describes the wider context of productivity; of course, we all assume that organisations are trying to do the right things more productively. Muir connects his value-based approach to the thinking of Thea Stein at the Nuffield Trust and the critical challenge by Stephen Black, who writes for the Health Service Journal, to the wider meaning of value in healthcare. It is not achieved by throwing more and more money into the frontline, hoping waiting lists, ED waits, and quality will improve. How NHS resources are allocated, managed and improved is not new. Not new because assumptions are made that the existing business model is the only business model that can optimise the allocation, management and improvement. We know that is not true because the data tells the story. Understanding productivity is the start that triggers the journey to new thinking. At STRASYS, we continue our work with Muir and health leaders to think differently and release the trapped value in healthcare.

Not only can the term be counterproductive as Thea Stein of the Nuffield Trust describes in an excellent blog - https://lnkd.in/eEqsW6QH it is also addressing the wrong issue. Peter Drucker captures this nicely in his famous preverb “there is nothing so useless as doing something efficiently which should not be done at all”. By 2050, one in four people across Europe and North America will be over the age of 65, significantly increasing pressure on health and care systems. The World Health Organization estimates that the global economy could add up to 40 million new healthcare jobs by 2030. “We have lots of data but little intelligence." If data is more valuable than oil as a commodity, its value, as with oil, is in the complex business of refinement and increasing product value to meet needs—in this case, making good decisions. Form over function In healthcare, we seem most excited by form rather than function. Form in data terms means data lakes, platforms, and even making data pretty. An activity that can cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions. The function is the hard stuff. The focus where data, even when imperfect, is where, with human intelligence and judgement, generates valuable insights and prompts the right questions. The critical question Are we making the best use of data and the art of decision intelligence to enable outcomes that meet population needs? Up and down the NHS Business Intelligence teams are maxed out, fulfilling all data requests. But how are these used to create value and maximise resource allocation other than fulfilling the needs of NHSE and regulators? As one CEO said recently, “We have lots of data but little intelligence." Avoiding the trap Often, health systems fall into the ‘data valley trap’, i.e. letting data and data products lead the discussions and investments. There have been big investments in connected datasets and the recent federated data platforms. Generative AI is the new thing in town. No doubt these will be helpful, but history and other sector experiences show that these are not the elusive silver bullets we are forever chasing. Thinking differently The world is far more complex. We need to think about connections and the right questions to ask. We need to move away from a command-and-control approach to using data to encourage organisations to be more curious and confident. We need to get the right balance between science and the very human experience of decision-making.
