2024's Words of the Year are coming in thick and fast - Collins Dictionary has chosen Brat, Cambridge has chosen Manifest, and Demure and Slop are on Oxford's shortlist.
Inevitably, conversation at Stratton Craig has turned towards our own nominees.
Elliott's chosen Era... "Inflation driver, heartthrob of cowboy hat producers worldwide, and linchpin of the global economic recovery. It's impossible to ignore the impact of this word - whether I wanted to or not."
For Charlie it was the year of the Queue after losing out on Glastonbury tickets this weekend, and the Oasis debacle earlier in the year. Not bitter at all...
And Sophie is backing one of the Oxford Dictionary candidates: Lore. Because "why use 'context' or 'background info', when lore makes the act of getting the full scoop sound like a fantasy quest?”
We've also discussed Suss, Trumpery, Slay and Banana 🍌 That last one was Ruth's - "In an era of climate grief, war, Trumpery, Charli XCXCXCXCXes and general sussness, I find it a very comforting word and mid-morning snack."
I think mine would be Jump - it's been a big year both inside and outside of work, and I've really tried to just jump in and enjoy the ride. It also works for the significant amount of jumping I've been doing in a bid to entertain my very energetic toddler😅 And the more I think about it, the more it's just an inherently fun word!
So go on... what would be yours?
