To remove the barriers that prevent homeless pet owners from accessing support and accommodation with their pet

About us

Since its inception in 2016 Street Paws has worked directly with pet owners experiencing homelessness to change the way they access services and ensure no one is forced to choose between their pet and a safe place to sleep. Our outreach work allowed us to understand the larger needs of homeless pet owners, leading us to pioneer the Dog Champion Scheme; partnering with hostels to support them in becoming pet friendly. Led by the needs of their clients, Street Paws offers free veterinary treatment and training to encourage responsible pet ownership. They provide check-ups, vaccinations, microchipping, preventative care, as well as essential pet supplies. Any pet registered to the Dog Champion Scheme will be able to access one to one support from the Street Paws team who can arrange more involved veterinary treatment at no cost when needed. Street Paws recognises the need to help change the system not just treat the symptom. Our team are on hand to signpost clients to support services and assist homeless pet owners to find accommodation, thus breaking the homelessness cycle.

  • Ahead of the festive season we thought it'd be a good idea to have a reminder of the common dangers that may await our four-legged friends. From food to wrapping paper, ribbons and plants - most of the things that bring us so much joy may result in a lot of illness to our furry companions. Here's a quick checklist of the most common toxins and hazards to watch out for: Food: raisins, sultanas, chocolate and alcohol infused delights, garlic and onions all sound delicious, but are highly toxic to most commonly kept pet species. Make sure all food is stored away safely away from your pet during this, and any other, time! Even if the food you are eating does not contain any of these ensure that the ingredients do not contain derivatives such as onion powder which is often stronger than onions themselves for example. Avoid sharing table scraps with your pets - human food is often a lot higher in fat and salt than what your pet eats on a regular basis and even small amounts may lead to gastrointestinal upset resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea! Pet toys: Ensure that whatever you gift your pets this festive season is not too dissimilar to their main diet. Dental chews should not be harder than what is comfortable for us to chew to avoid teeth damage and rawhide is best steered away from. This common pet shop item is often dyed into Christmas colours and appears very attractive, but is very hard for pets to digest and often results in blockages. And finally: be prepared for emergencies. Not all veterinary practices stay open during festive periods, but their websites and social media will often redirect you to the closest emergency centre. It is always a good idea to know where that is ahead of time so make sure you check just in case! Huge thanks to Vet Agata our Trustee and her gorgeous dog Lazaro for making this post! xx

  • 🎄🐾 Keep Your dog Safe This Christmas 🐾🎄 The festive season brings beautiful decorations, but some can be dangerous for dogs! 🚨 🌿 Holly, ivy, mistletoe, and poinsettia can cause vomiting, drooling, and more severe issues if ingested. If your dog eats any of these: 🐕 Stay calm 📞 Contact your vet immediately 💧 Do NOT induce vomiting unless advised Keep tails wagging and holidays happy! 🎅🐶 #DogSafety #PetTips #ChristmasSafety #StreetPaws

  • Stay Safe on Darker Walks with Your Dog 🐾🌌 As the evenings draw in, it’s important to stay safe while enjoying your walks with your furry friend! Here are some top tips for visibility and safety: ✨ Be Seen, Stay Safe: Wear reflective clothing and a high-vis vest. Equip your dog with a reflective collar, lead, or harness, and consider adding LED lights to their gear. 🔦 Light the Way: Carry a torch or wear a headlamp to see your path clearly. A headlamp keeps your hands free, making it easier to manage your dog. 🏠 Stick to Familiar Routes: Walk on well-lit streets and avoid unfamiliar areas to ensure you and your dog stay secure. 🚶♂️ Walk Smart: Walk against traffic and keep your dog on the side farthest from vehicles. 🐕 Take It Slow: Let your dog move at their own pace and enjoy the walk safely. 📯 Bring a Whistle: A whistle can help you recall your dog if they wander. 💡 Try a PupLight: Attach a PupLight to your dog’s collar for extra visibility—it lights the way for both of you! 🧥 Dress for the Weather: Bundle up to stay warm during chilly evenings. 👫 Buddy Up: Walk with a friend or neighbor when possible for added safety. Let’s keep walks safe and fun for you and your pup this season! 🐾💛 #DogWalkingSafety #StayVisible #DogCareTips #StreetPaws
