Bridging the gap between food waste and food poverty locally

About us

Our Mission To bridge the gap between food waste and food poverty locally We have been active in sourcing and distributing surplus food to those in need and fundraising for local foodbanks and other charities. We provide fresh frozen cooked meals which are distributed to other charities and our ethos is to provide one free meal for charity from each meal sold (Buy One Feed One Free) There are 4 strands to the charity: 1. Food Redistribution Fresh food that would otherwise have gone to waste is redistributed for free to support local foodbanks, schools, care homes, shelters, clubs, religious organisations and more. This is on a substantial scale with the charity currently collecting and donating on average 10 tonnes of food per week. 2. Surplus Café The Surplus Café is run by a professional chef cooking surplus food. Our ethos is to provide one free meal for charity from each meal sold at the cafe (Buy One Feed One Free). The menu is varied with a range of staple and special items. Produce will change weekly, so come down to see what’s on offer. 3. Surplus Shop Every weekend there is a Surplus Shop where we provide good quality food which would otherwise go to waste. The Surplus Shop is for everyone in our community who needs fresh produce. We ask for a mindful donation which will help us to continue supporting local foodbanks, charities, school lunch projects and community groups across the local area. 4. Events We provide good quality surplus food right across the food industry for any occasion and all meals provided by Surplus to Supper are part of our 'Buy One Feed One Free' initiative: providing free meals for people in need within our community. We want to take a moment to extend our gratitude to our corporate partners for their support and dedication. Your efforts play a vital role in helping us to bridge the gaps between food waste and food poverty that exist in our community. Together, we are making a real difference! Thank you for being part of this journey. #TeamWork #CorporateSupport #MakingADifference

As part of our British airways induction, myself and the future leader cohort spent a day volunteering at one of British Airways’ charity partners Surplus to Supper. It was such a positive day, getting involved and being able to work as a team for the first time. From sorting out stock, to making goodie bags to even cleaning the fridges, we were kept busy! It was lovely to meeting some of the 200 regular volunteers, as they shared facts and stories about the charity, as well as what it means to their community in Sunbury and beyond. Starting just 4 years ago, Surplus to Supper takes food that would’ve otherwise gone to landfill, repurposes and redistributes it to a variety of people and organisations. We saw crates of fresh fruit and veg go to schools, churches and food banks, as well as the chef using some to make around 800 microwave meals. They also put on weekly markets to ensure no food goes to waste. I hope we can continue this partnership throughout our time at British airways, through volunteering and donations. Thank you to the whole team for being so welcoming and I hope to see you again!

A Heartfelt Thank You from Surplus to HMP & YOI Feltham This June, we had the honor of welcoming an exceptional young adult into our kitchen at Surplus to Supper. He took on the role of chef assistant as part of the Temporary Licence Programme, beginning his journey with us after a successful interview that led him to join our team in July. He has been volunteering three times a week, working closely with our dedicated head chef Mario and a group of surplus kitchen passionate volunteers. Our mission at Surplus to Supper is straightforward: to tackle food waste while addressing food poverty in our local communities. We are committed to sourcing and distributing surplus food to those in need while raising funds for local food banks and other charitable organisations. Throughout his time with us, this young volunteer not only made significant contributions to our cause but also acquired invaluable catering skills. Coming from a family that owns a restaurant, he was eager to learn and immersed himself in the daily operations of our kitchen. He even participated in catering large events, serving around 250 guests, including notable clients like Middlesex County Cricket and the High Sheriff of Surrey. A recent highlight was his opportunity to host a two-course meal, where he took charge as head chef, with our head chef stepping into the role of his assistant. The Operations Director of our charity supported him as a kitchen porter, while apprentices served as his waitstaff. This special event welcomed around 40 distinguished guests, including the Governor and supportive staff from Feltham, volunteers from his other ROTL placement, members of a local non-league football club, fellow parkrun volunteers, trustees from our charity, and the wonderful volunteers he had worked alongside over the months. Drawing inspiration from his Turkish heritage, he prepared an authentic, delicious meal that garnered enthusiastic praise from all attendees, celebrating his hard work and growth during his time with us. Our collaboration with HMP & YOI Feltham has proven to be a tremendous success, fostering a mutually beneficial experience for both the young adult and Surplus to Supper. His commitment resulted in 180 hours of meaningful volunteer work, which we genuinely appreciated. We look forward to the continued evolution of this initiative in the coming months and are excited about future collaborations that empower young individuals to flourish. With heartfelt gratitude, The Surplus to Supper Team HMP & YOI Feltham Keith Potter; Business, Community & Engagement Manager

Today myself and some of the team spent the day volunteering at Surplus to Supper one of the charities supported by British Airways. This is an amazing charity who are bridging the gap between food waste and food poverty. Totally in awe of the work they do every day, redistributing food to those who need it that would otherwise go into landfill. Great to help out, gain some perspective and give back. 🙏

This week brought another unique opportunity as we were honored to be part of HRH The Duke of Gloucester on a visit to the FareShare Sussex & Surrey & Surrey Guildford Depot. During the visit, The Duke of Gloucester he unveiled a commemorative plaques on the new Freezer and Chiller units, which will enhance the rescue and transportation of more food throughout Surrey. It was great to be with some incredible charities and food industry partners based in Surrey.

Proud to the supporting our community with our buy one feed one free initiative…

We'd like to thank Surplus to Supper for supplying our first-team with food this week and in doing so, we were delighted to support the charity's 'Buy One Feed One Free' initiative. Surplus to Supper are a North Surrey and London based charity that sources and redistributes surplus food that would otherwise have gone to waste. The charity currently collect and donate on average 10 tons of food per week and redistribute to foodbanks, schools, care homes, shelters, clubs, refuges, religious organisations and more. They also operate a Surplus Cafe and Surplus Shop using their redistributed ingredients to raise money for their charitable branch, and cater for events in which each meal bought provides a free meal for charity. #TheShots❤️💙
