  • 📌 The European Commission has approved the Carbon Market Report, which depicts the performance of the European Union Emissions Trading System in 2023 and the first half of 2024. The European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) was revised in 2023 as part of the Fit for 55 legislative package and is now fully implemented. The published report summarizes the legislative works completed to date to implement the ETS revision. The European Union Emission Trading System observed a 16.5% reduction in emissions from stationary plants driven by the  power sector. It is stated that the use of renewable energy, especially wind and solar energy, has increased significantly in electricity production. With this development, a 2005 reduction in ETS emissions compared to 60% reduction in the 2030 target was observed, with a 47.6% reduction. At the same time, in 2023, the increase in activity in the sector was shown by causing intra-European aviation emissions to increase by over 10% compared to 2022 levels. The 2024 emissions limit has been reduced by 90 million allowances, with the system now extending to the EU’s fair share of emissions from maritime transport. The aim is to strengthen the application of the emissions trading system in aviation. In 2024, 25% fewer free permits were allocated to aircraft operators. It was reported that new rules will be implemented to monitor and report the non-CO2 impacts of aviation from 2025. Monitoring and reporting rules have also been established for the new separate Emissions Trading System ETS2, which will help to advance emissions reductions from buildings, road transport and other sectors. #sustainability #ETS #sustainablefuture

  • August 1st Earth Overshoot Day The date on which human demand for natural resources exceeds the Earth's capacity to regenerate them for a given year, Earth Overshoot Day is determined for 1 August 2024. This year's Earth Overshoot Day, which coincides with August 1st, demonstrates that humanity is currently using natural sources 1.7 times faster than our planet's ecosystems can regenerate. The consequences of excessive consumption of ecological resources are deforestation, soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and carbon dioxide accumulation in the atmosphere. This has been noted to lead more often to extreme weather events and decreased food production. Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by the Global Footprint Network, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the ecological footprint. #EarthOvershootDay #sustainability #sustainablefuture For more information: https://lnkd.in/d-7xEg-t

  • Since 1993, the United Nations has observed World Water Day on March 22nd, with a focus on the significance of freshwater. It aims to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people who do not have access to clean water and to take action to combat the global water crisis. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is largely dependent on a well-managed water cycle for success, especially when it comes to issues of hunger, gender equity, health, education, livelihoods, sustainability, and ecosystems. Being the vital connection between the environment, human society, and the climate system, water is also essential for adapting to climate change. Supporting the accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goal 6—water and sanitation for all by 2030—is a major objective of World Water Day. The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’. 💧 In order to protect water resources, attention should be paid to saving water consumption. In this regard, calculating the water footprint and targeting actions to reduce the determined use will contribute. #WorldWaterDay #WaterforPeace #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #SustainableFuture
