  • Healthcare professionals in Swansea Bay are reminding people that antibiotics aren’t always needed when it comes to seasonal illnesses. It can be more common for viral illnesses such as colds, coughs and sore throats to circulate as we head into the winter months. But it is important to remember that antibiotics aren’t always the answer as they can only treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics can’t kill off viral infections, so self-care, such as staying hydrated, resting and taking painkillers to control symptoms, is often advised for those feeling unwell. Taking antibiotics when they aren’t needed can create a risk of antimicrobial resistance, where bugs are exposed to antibiotics and develop a way of overcoming their actions so they will no longer work. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eqN2MHWj #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • A new team to help develop and support staff working in primary care has launched in Swansea Bay. The Primary and Community Care Academy can provide and direct primary care staff to a variety of education and training opportunities to enable them to enhance their skills. Its aim is to help develop the workforce within primary care, including GPs, pharmacists, optometrists, dentists, nurses, allied health professionals (AHPs) and more. It is hoped that in doing so, staff will be supported to provide a wider range of services and interventions in the community. The Academy is one of seven set up in health boards across Wales, working with Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). As its development continues, the vision is for it to become a centre of excellence for education and training for staff. It will also focus on attracting, developing and supporting primary care staff by embedding new multidisciplinary roles and encouraging workforce planning. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/ertqFN5w #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • Staff from the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery have been sharing their expertise with professionals from all over the world as it approaches its 30th anniversary. The centre at Morriston Hospital, one of the largest and busiest in Europe, provides specialist care to more than 1,000 people every year, half of whom are children, and treats more than 6,500 people who need plastic surgery, often following trauma, infection and cancer. Its work and reputation saw seven members of the centre being invited to the British Burns Association’s annual conference, which this year twinned with the International Society for Burns Injuries to mark its 20th conference. The group included five medical staff, a therapist and nurse. They gave presentations to attendees after papers they submitted were selected to share with fellow experts. The event also saw advanced clinical nurse specialist Louise Scannell appointed the lead for nurses working in the field of burn care throughout the UK and Ireland. The position is the association’s second lead appointment from Swansea Bay UHB, with advanced practitioner occupational Therapist Janine Evans heading the association’s therapists’ group. Louise said: “My presentation was about how we maintain standards with so few paediatric burns nurses, and how do we continue to recruit, train and develop such specialist nurses. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eDyc8cAy #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard

  • A Swansea mum has become the first person in the UK to receive a new 10-minute injection to help prevent the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Emma Cullen previously had to undergo an intravenous (IV) infusion twice a year which would take up to four hours during each visit. But the medication ocrelizumab, which helps to prevent relapses and slow the progression of MS, has now been approved to be given via an under-the-skin injection. MS, which is lifelong, happens when a person’s immune system attacks their brain and spinal cord. The immune system creates cells that attack and kill viruses in the body but for those with MS, the cells attack the nerves instead. Ocrelizumab sticks to one type of the cells, called B cells, and helps to eliminate them to stop them reaching and attacking the brain and spinal cord. The treatment is specifically used for patients with active relapsing MS (where symptoms can flare-up but then go away or get better) or early primary progressive MS (where symptoms slowly get worse over time). Swansea Bay was previously involved in the original clinical trial for the drug and has now administered the first injection at the Jill Rowe Neurology Ambulatory Unit in Morriston Hospital. 👉 Read more on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eWiem4Ci #NHS #NHSWales #Healthcare #SwanseaBayUniversityHealthBoard
