We’re in Java cutting 3 more containers of our FLEGT certified FSC produced Teak to add to our 250m3 on the ground in England. Currently the water is a little murky when it comes to marine Teak. At Sykes we’re offering a quality legal option and have implemented a comprehensive due diligence process with a full time Sykes compliance team. Each load is accompanied with a folder of certificates that’s almost too heavy to carry. Its time illegal teak is fully removed from our markets and companies have the option of a legal, sustainable and quality Teak without fear of repercussions.

Cutting English Pippy Oak. A cracking afternoon cutting beautiful English Pippy Oak. It's rare occurrence for every log to bring smile to your face. Pippy Oak is not a different species that grows uniquely; rather it is a result of certain natural conditions and processes that affect common oak trees. The distinctive patterns occur when the tree reacts to environmental stressors such as wind or disease by producing clusters of epicormic shoots.

There’s plenty going on in Warwickshire as more loads roll into our yard from around the world. Today is even busier beyond our county borders, we have Sykes representatives cutting Khaya in the Congo, Teak in Indonesia and English Oak in… England. 

Today we move out of our home of 60 years. This building was constructed when my Grandfather made the plucky commitment to move Sykes Timber away from Birmingham after over a century. The building is now looking wearied and rather Stalinist. It’s time to upgrade for the next 60 years. We’re building a hub for quality timber in the UK. In 44 weeks, we should have something that resembles these images.

Final meetings at Sykes Timber today before new office renovations start. A year and a half of hard work for the many people involved in this project. Soon we will finally see the fruits of our labour.

A constructive first four days of the Southampton boat show, six to go... it’s been incredibly rewarding seeing so much Sykes Timber on the pontoon. Sykes are promoting that quality; sustainable and legal timber is alive and thriving and will not bankrupt you. Why use plastic?

An enjoyable day that started by cutting 40’ English Oak logs and finished with an inspection at an estate in West London.
