Last week marked the first deliveries of urgent blood samples by Apian drones between our labs at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. These drones can make the journey between sites in under 2 minutes, representing a dramatic decrease from the nearly half hour road journey and a significant positive impact for patients awaiting urgent treatment or surgery. Professor Dominic Harrington, Chief Scientific Officer, Synnovis, said: "Tens of thousands of essential patient samples are analysed by pathology laboratories across London each week. Reducing the time it takes to transport these samples means results are available more quickly to inform best possible patient care. We’re excited to be working with Apian on this pioneering project and look forward to seeing where this can go next.” This innovative solution will have a positive impact on both patient care and the environment, and we’re very proud to be supporting it. https://lnkd.in/deQffUCv

About us
Synnovis is a partnership between SYNLAB UK & Ireland, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, performing more than 32 million pathology tests a year across a network of routine and specialist laboratories. Serving a population of 1.7 million in south east London, we bring together the very best in clinical, scientific and operational expertise to provide a pathology service which aims to create better outcomes for patients and make a positive difference to people’s health and wellbeing. We work collaboratively with the NHS, SYNLAB, clinical users and other stakeholders – every sample we process represents an individual patient in our joint care, and we understand the important role we play in continually developing services to meet that important responsibility.

It’s been 8 months since the first patient samples arrived at our state-of-the-art hub laboratory in south east London, and our progress is gathering pace. When our transformation programme is complete our hub will serve almost 2 million patients in the area and process more than a 1,000,000 tests per day. It will also free up space across Trust sites for other important NHS services. It’s a fantastic place to be, with 10 floors of cutting-edge lab space and dedicated and inspiring colleagues working across the floors we’ve moved into so far. It’s great to be able to celebrate our progress as our transformation of pathology services for patients in south east London continues. We were thrilled last week to join Apian in welcoming the Minister for Aviation, Mike Kane MP, and officials from Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom to Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The Minister’s visit was an excellent opportunity to showcase the way Apian has partnered with the Trust to deliver blood samples for urgent testing between our Synnovis labs at both hospitals. Our team had the opportunity to demonstrate the process of preparing a sample for delivery, and the Minister was able to play a role in readying it for collection by drone. Reflecting on the visit, Professor Dominic Harrington, Chief Scientific Officer, Synnovis said: "We’re proud to be working with Apian and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust on this pioneering project, already making a real difference to the lives of patients. Transporting samples between sites so quickly means our pathology laboratory teams can analyse them sooner and inform the best possible care for those needing urgent treatment. Our team was delighted to show the Minister the work we’re doing, and the impact this project will have on patients in south east London”.

At Synnovis we're helping to improve care for breast cancer patients by introducing a liquid biopsy technique, called circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) testing, to monitor and detect tumour progression. Healthcare professionals can provide patients with accurate data and treatment based on information collected from a simple blood sample, potentially eliminating the need for invasive biopsies. Liquid biopsy technology has the potential to: ➡ reduce or avoid invasive biopsies ➡ identify other tumours in the body, which could otherwise be missed ➡ achieve quicker results for patients ➡ reduce the need for follow-up investigations. Learn more from Synnovis geneticists Persephone du Parcq, Gareth Gerrard and Deborah Ruddy about how scientific excellence and patient centricity are at the heart of this cutting-edge service. It’s #BiomedicalScienceDay2024, an annual celebration highlighting the fantastic work done by biomedical scientists around the world. We’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the efforts of our own BMSs who, in spite of any challenge they face, always work incredibly hard and remain dedicated to their craft. They are at the #heartofhealthcare and play a critical role in our operations. Thank you all!
