NSTA Technology Survey & Insights 2024 In support of their Strategy, the NSTA has a role in the development and deployment of technologies which support energy security and emissions reduction. They gather information from Operators about the technologies they have already installed and their efforts to identify solutions which could enhance operations in future.  They have recently released their 2024 report which includes highlights such as: 50 UKCS Operators completed the annual Technology Survey and submitted Technology Plans by the end of February 2024. There was strong evidence of a continuing focus on technologies for the effective and cost-efficient development of remaining hydrocarbon resources, complemented by efforts to reduce emissions. What is quite striking is that the direct spend on technology and the amount spent on R&D has not significantly changed over the last 10 years, despite rising costs and inflation. It is particularly concerning to see the real terms drop in R&D spending. The biggest overall expenditure is on facilities management (about 30% of technology spend), followed by installations / topsides and reservoir and well management. Helium isn’t just used to make people laugh by talking in a high pitched voice! Helium has many uses including: * MRI machines, NMR spectrometers, and other diagnostic equipment. * Cooling nuclear reactors, rocket fuel, and thermographic cameras. * To create an inert gas shield in arc welding. * To provide a protective atmosphere for making semiconductors and fiber optics. * Helium-neon lasers are used in eye surgery and to scan barcodes in supermarkets. Helium has now been found in new and unexpected places. For decades, it has been common practice to produce helium as a by-product from oil and gas fields. However, (historic) mine exploration boreholes have recently proven to be attractive locations to look for helium, too. In Finland, 80 Mile positively tested copper-zinc exploration boreholes, while Pulsar Helium has drilled an appraisal well in Minnesota after nickel exploration accidentally found helium. In South Africa, Renergen is producing helium and biogenic methane in the Witwatersrand basin, which has traditionally been mined for gold. Last week we attended the Petex conference in London. Overall it was a great conference with about 500 attendees and over 80 papers presented. Some of the great things that we learnt were: Starlink is enabling seismic data to be transferred directly from the boat to the office for instant QC and processing, speeding up the whole acquisition and processing time. There is still lots of potential west of Shetlands though it may mostly be gas. Shell has re-looked at the chemical signatures of discovered oil and gas and believes that not everything in the North Sea has come from the Kimmeridge Clay! Quite what this means for further exploration is hard to say but it is quite a change. The Selene discovery came about more due to physics than geophysics, which is always good to see. Understanding velocities and their impact on a prospect is an unappreciated skill.
