About us
Tate & Lyle Sugars has been refining sugar continuously at Thames Refinery since 1878. Over 140 years later it’s still going strong and today employs over 500 people. Not many companies have remained a favorite household brand - producing the same family of products, at the same location, for well over a century - so what’s the secret of its success? The answer lies in its people and its core values: ambition, innovation and pace. So, while Tate & Lyle Sugars may still be based in the same place, new developments continue. In 2008, Tate & Lyle Sugars became the largest ever UK food and drink brand to switch to Fairtrade (starting with its granulated white sugar) and a project is currently underway to slash the refinery’s carbon footprint by over 25%, thanks to pioneering green technology developed by Tate & Lyle Sugars research and technology teams. In 2010 Tate & Lyle Sugars was acquired by American Sugar Refining, Inc., based in Yonkers, New York, it is the world’s largest cane sugar refining company, dedicated to cane sugar with a total refining capacity of over 6 million tons of sugar per annum. The company produces a full line of consumer, industrial, food service and specialty sweetener products. Across North America, American Sugar Refining owns and operates six sugar refineries -- in New York, California, Maryland, Louisiana, Canada and Mexico -- as well as specialty sweetener production facilities and a strategic warehousing and distribution system that combine to provide seamless production and delivery of its products to customers across the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the European Union, the company owns and operates sugar refineries in England and Portugal American Sugar Refining’s products are marketed through its brand portfolio that includes the premiere sugar brands Domino®, C&H®, Florida Crystals®, Redpath® and Tate & Lyle®.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week! We’re delighted to celebrate the role apprenticeships play in helping our colleagues develop skills and rewarding careers at Tate & Lyle Sugars. To start the week off, we’re celebrating our super-star apprentice David Roberts, awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Food & Drink Federation Annual Awards 2024 and Best Apprentice Award at SOFHT Awards 2024. Both awards honour David’s incredible journey - from a childhood curiosity about engineering to achieving success through hard work, determination, and a love for learning, and a true champion for what people with drive can achieve through an apprenticeship. We have been refining raw cane sugar on the banks of the River Thames for over 145 years, so we’ve seen some big challenges and some big changes. In the 1970s, we made the then ambitious decision to convert our Refinery from coal to natural gas. Now we’re looking to transition once more, as we explore options to cut our carbon emissions. Unfortunately, it’s simply not possible to do that using electricity alone. To decarbonise our factory, we’ve got to find a way to decarbonise steam production – and electricity can’t do that. We need to replace natural gas with another gas, like hydrogen. Unlike other technologies, hydrogen could enable us to decarbonise without needing to overhaul whole parts of our factory. So we’re pleased to be joining several other leading British businesses exploring the potential for hydrogen to decarbonise UK manufacturing, as part of the #MadeWithHydrogen consortium.

We are delighted to share the successful Grantees of the 2024 Lyle’s Local Fund! We received over 110 applications and were delighted to award grants of up to £5,000 to 12 organisations in December 2024. Between them, these organisations support some of the most vulnerable people, both young and old, in our community, and represent the breadth of the brilliant work that is being done across Newham. Learn more about these Grantees and their projects at https://lnkd.in/gBrNZd9N We’re looking forward to visiting these projects and hearing more about their progress as they get under way this year. Running since 2017, the Lyle's Local Fund has awarded over £250,000 to over 110 projects that support safe, prosperous and healthy communities in Newham. We are so proud of our Newham roots and the Lyle’s Local Fund exists to support the very special organisations, projects and people who work hard to make our borough a better place to live and work. Each year, we are blown away by the number and variety of incredible funding applications and decided to double the size of the Fund to £50,000 so we can support more organisations who contribute to making our borough the wonderful place it is. #sustainablyrefined #newham #lyleslocalfund

Research shows that in Central American countries, like Belize where most of our Fairtrade sugar is grown, women typically earn a third less than men, and less than half of women are part of the workforce (compared to 78% in the UK). Since 2008, Tate & Lyle's Fairtrade licensed sales in the UK have contributed an estimated £32 million in Fairtrade Premium. Initiatives funded by the brand’s Fairtrade Premium have included a programme focused on female empowerment by The Progressive Sugarcane Producers Association. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eMdAuHeb

Conserving jaguars in Belize Working with our suppliers to encourage them to adopt sustainable agriculture practices, including protecting and increasing biodiversity, is key to sustainable farming and to helping us achieve net zero. Our supplier in Belize, Belize Sugar Industries, has run a jaguar conservation workshop to educate employees, farmers and their families about the importance of preserving the magnificent jaguar, and what to do if they encounter them. Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III We are very proud that we have been granted a Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III. It means the world to us and our colleagues. The Warrant has been something we’ve held dear since 1912, when Abram Lyle & Sons received our first Royal Warrant. This was for the supply of Lyle’s Golden Syrup to the household of King George V, the great-grandfather of King Charles III. We were honoured that for over 60 years our products displayed the Royal Warrant kindly granted to us by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We look forward to displaying our new warrant in 2025. Gerald Mason, Grantee of the Royal Warrant and Senior Vice President of Tate & Lyle Sugars, commented “The warrant means different things to different companies. For us, it’s a continuation of our proud 100-plus year history of supplying the Royal Household. It’s a precious day for us and our colleagues in the UK.”
