How do you measure the cost-effectiveness of life-saving treatments? Cell and Gene Therapies (CGTs) are transforming healthcare with their potential to treat life-threatening conditions. However, the high costs associated pose significant challenges to widespread adoption. In this blog, Lara Zaki, FEI Strategy and Innovation Consultant, delves into the complex health economics of CGTs and examines the challenges in demonstrating cost-effectiveness. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: • 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 (𝗤𝗢𝗟) 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀: standardised methods, like EQ-5D questionnaires, can misrepresent the experiences of patients with chronic conditions like sickle cell disease • 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: systemic inequalities, such as racial biases in healthcare access and treatment, may result in the severity or frequency of symptoms being underreported, affecting cost-effectiveness evaluations • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: accurate health economic assessments require robust definitions of clinical efficacy, long-term value metrics and the inclusion of caregiver QOL impacts Understanding these challenges is crucial to ensure that therapies designed to save lives can reach the patients who need them most.
