We are very sad to report the death of our long time friend and engineer Don Morris this week. Don had a long and varied career and held a wide range of skills. He came to work for Litton Veam as a design engineer having previously worked at Hughes International in Glenrothes. Don was the replacement for the late Walter Chalmers who designed the original Powerlock series. Don’s first task was to work on the design of the new NRG series Powerlock which featured fingerproof connectors at both ends. This went far more smoothly than the first tooling after learning the lessons from first time around. This series has been copied by competitors and adopted as a market standard in most of the developed world. Following that Don worked on the Snaplock series among other developments until the site was closed following the sale of the business to ITT Cannon. Don then came to work with us at Ten 47 with a huge breadth of different tasks from developing new products to making up assembly procedures for assemblies to actually making fixtures and fittings in the small toolroom we set up for him. Eric Cooke our long term Product Manager and Don worked particularly closely together. It would be fair to say that Don was a character and old school, he was also very kind and was the first to support any new start and make sure they were looked after. Don had a lot of hobbies including fishing, bowls, handy work, car boot sales and caravaning with wife Alice and family. He eventually decided to retire but seemed to have more comebacks than Frank Sinatra before finally calling it a day. He helped us find his replacement, his former assistant Iain Watson. He was always in touch and came along to the Christmas party night out. If asked about how his life went I’m sure his answer would be “nae too bad”. Which translated actually means very good.

We were thrilled to see ITV Studios at our Lex UK site, as they filmed scenes outside the historic Frances Colliery winch tower for the upcoming season of Karen Pirie based on a series of novels by local author, Val McDermid. The Frances Colliery, on which our factory is built, played a significant part of local history and was shut down in 1985 due to an underground fire amid the Miners' Strike, and permanently closed in 1988. We're delighted to see this iconic landmark featured and memorialized in the series. We can't wait to watch Karen Pirie and see how they've transported this piece of history back to 1984.
