Today is World Soil Day, an annual initiative set up by the United Nations to focus global attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. This year's theme is "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage" and highlights the importance of accurate soil data and information in understanding soils' characteristics and supporting informed decision-making on sustainable soil management for food security. Terrafarmer's Tom Tolputt spent a very positive Friday at the inaugural LandAlive conference, the new sustainable food and farming conference for the South West: "Land Alive exceeded our expectations. An excellent range of plenary speakers and thought-provoking breakout sessions, with the 'Financing Farm Transition' and 'Can Farming Ever Escape Its Glyphosphate Dependency' being particularly well received. "It was a pleasure to speak alongside Tamara Giltsoff and Francis Clarke and Lucy Noad on the importance of soil health data -- and data in general! -- for farm businesses going forward. As the saying goes, you can't manage what you're not measuring and monitoring. A special thank you to Francis and Lucy for speaking so openly about their own experiences and journey. It was clear just how useful the delegates found it. "Overall, Land Alive was a very engaging conference and a welcome addition to the South and Southwest agricultural event calendar. "Next year will see a 76% reduction of the first £30,000 of a payment, with a 100% reduction for any amount over £30,000. This means the fastest reduction in subsidy for large farm businesses. For example, a 450-ha business that claimed around £100,000 in 2020 will only receive £8,000 next year. This will pose significant financial challenges, especially for farms heavily reliant on this income to offset high operational costs."
