About us
The Access to Justice Foundation is a registered charity established in 2008 by the Advice Services Alliance, Bar Council, CILEx and the Law Society to receive and distribute financial resources to help get free of charge (pro bono) legal assistance to those who need it most. The Foundation receives funding from: (i) The pro bono costs programme as the beneficiary of pro bono costs orders made by the courts in civil proceedings where the successful party was represented pro bono (ii) 'It's not just peanuts' campaign under which law firms donate their unclaimed client account balances; (iii) General donations. Any funds received are ploughed back into the pro bono community with the Foundation distributing them to advice services including Law Centres, CABx, and Legal Support Trusts.

Commercial Barrister and Arbitrator at 4 Pump Court. Member of the Attorney-General's "A" Panel of London Counsel. Called to the Bars of England & Wales and of the British Virgin Islands.
£1,500 is on its way to The Access to Justice Foundation thanks to the #ProBono costs order that I obtained this morning. Generally speaking it’s wise for an independent advocate to avoid expressing delight or disappointment about the outcome of a case but I’m pretty chuffed about that. Information on how to ask for such orders is on the AJF website.

Organisational Development & Compliance Consultant. Director of the LAPG Management & Leadership Hub. Non-practising Solicitor. Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
I had the great joy yesterday, along with my colleagues Tina Puryear and Vicky Ling, to host some of the 2024 Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) Management & Leadership Programme alumni at our autumn management symposium. We heard really thought provoking presentations from Zoe Amar FCIM and Jess Romo (on AI and EDI respectively). The LAPG Management & Leadership Hub, and the Management & Leadership training it runs, has been a passion project of mine for many years. I honestly believe (and our independent evaluation shows) that if we can support, educate and empower managers (and trustees) we will make a real and lasting contribution to the resilience and impact of the non-profit advice sector (and though LAPG we run similar training for the wider legal aid sector). Vicky Ling and I have spent hundreds of hours researching, writing and delivering various versions of this programme for nearly ten years now. None of this would be possible though without the support of funders like The Legal Education Foundation, The Access to Justice Foundation, the AB Charitable Trust, and the The National Lottery Community Fund. Applications for the 2025 Management & Leadership Programme are open now. You can find details at: https://lnkd.in/eeJUxUDQ We've now had over 200 managers through the programme over the last several years. From 2025 we hope to run two face to face management symposia each year (spring and autumn) and all past programme participants will be welcome to attend. If you've been on the course you'll get an email over the next few weeks. I'm really looking forward to welcoming the next group of participants in January 2025 with my new co-lead trainer, Jayne B..

Thank you to all attendees who joined us at the November Social Justice Funders Group (SJFG) meeting where we explored criminal justice and the intersection with social justice issues. Thanks to our speakers Dr Patrick Williams (Harm to Healing Collective), Laura D. (AB Charitable Trust), Debbie Pippard (Barrow Cadbury Trust), and Dr Gemma Birkett (Criminal Justice Alliance), for their time and for sharing their learning and recommendations on how to better support the people, communities and organisations in this space. These are the key learnings from the session: · Harm to Healing Collective’s work highlights the need to drive interventions in a community-led way, to ensure we properly understand the harms that racially minoritised communities have experienced and insulate the community from the severe and disproportionate impact. · AB Charitable Trust has been funding work to address the intersection between racial justice and the criminal legal system. · The T2A - Transition to Adulthood Alliance works at the interface between criminal justice and young people. They presented the recent report by Institute For Voluntary Action Research which explores long-term working and adopting a high tolerance for risk to fund and affect systems change. · Collaboration is a key priority for the Criminal Justice Alliance, and the focus of their recent ‘Time for Change’ report is recommending rehabilitation over punishment, increasing lived experience, and addressing systemic issues such as institutional racism. · NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) has been commissioned by Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales in partnership with HM Prison and Probation Service, AB Charitable Trust, Clinks, and the JABBS Foundation, to research and map the funding landscape for charities working with and around the criminal justice system. We heard more from Yunus Kaan Yilmazturk on existing 360Giving data, and the survey they are planning to launch in the coming weeks (we’ll share this when we have it too!) If you are a funder and would like to become a group member, please find more information and sign up here. #AccessToJustice #SocialJustice #Funders #CommunityLedLawyering
