This week has been a roller coaster of news from environmental policy u-turns to the latest State of Nature report, all painting a bleak picture of the future of the British Isles. With 1 in 6 species at risk of extinction, it has never been more imperative to restore our landscapes and improve the health of habitats. On occasions like this, we must provide hope and a glimpse of a solution. With the construction of our wetlands now complete, and all staff and equipment vacating the site leaving the existing Land Yeo River reconnected to its original floodplain, it’s time to let nature take over and let the site recover and grow. We are proud of what has been completed within 4 months. What was once a degraded agricultural field has been restored into a complex wetland ecosystem and will develop into a wild landscape in the years to come. If a project like this can be delivered within 4 months, can you imagine what could be achieved across the UK with the correct capital and resources? While government funding plays a critical role in nature recovery, private capital is essential for achieving restoration goals on a broad scale and at the pace required for a liveable future. The urgency of environmental restoration requires innovative financing models that leverage the resources and expertise of the private sector. Our wetlands project serves as a testament to the power of natural capital and demonstrates that if expertise, resources and finance are aligned with ecological ambition, remarkable progress can be made. It has never been more important. Source: State of Nature #NatureRecovery #Wetlands #HabitatRestoration

Next up in our Meet the Team series is Olivia Adkins, PA, to the Director of Estates. Olivia’s path from high-end event management to Belmont is packed with a passion for people, organisation, and the outdoors. Olivia’s journey at Belmont started in 2020, and since then, she has been a key part of the company's evolution. Her role has grown from assisting the Estate Manager to supporting the entire Office and Estate Teams with farming admin, purchasing, and more. In many respects, Olivia is the ‘𝑔𝑙𝑢𝑒’ that keeps a lot of plates spinning at Belmont. Here are some more fun facts about Liv: 🐖 She loves the pigs on the estate - especially Dotty! They’re her favourite animals and remind her of dogs. 🌾 When she’s not working, Olivia’s out on long walks with her husband and dog, cooking, or enjoying music festivals. ⛰️ Her future goal? Explore Scotland’s rugged beauty, from the Isle of Harris to the Highlands! 👉 Dive into Olivia’s story in our latest blog! https://lnkd.in/edM2zH7V #Team #Community #Office #MeetTheTeam #Nature

The Belmont team recently participated in Climate Fresk training, an interactive, science-based workshop designed to deepen our understanding of climate change. Using insights from the Nobel Prize-winning IPCC reports, we explored the causes, impacts, and solutions to the climate crisis through a collaborative, hands-on approach. The workshops were an exciting addition to regular working roles, deepening our understanding of climate science and strengthening our connections as a team. The workshops provided opportunities for the estate and office departments with different experiences and perspectives to work closely to identify actionable solutions. At Belmont, we believe that knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration are keys to tackling climate change and driving meaningful impact in our industry. 👉 Read our latest blog to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eRgg-UpY #ClimateAwareness #Team #Learning #Knowledge #Action #ClimateChange #Climate #Community

On a wintery day like today, we wanted to share some colour 💙🧡💚 Thanks to the dedication of our incredible wildlife volunteers, we've been graced with the most stunning photographs of kingfishers this year. These birds have been thriving thanks to last year's completed rewetting project, which has resulted in two successful fledglings in Watercress Farm this year. The project has expanded their habitat, making sightings more frequent and filling our cameras with these breathtaking moments. Plus, the expanded habitat is helping to create more opportunities for the community to come together and connect with nature and each other. Volunteers meet regularly to share knowledge, capture stunning images, and celebrate the progress we're all making together. We were thrilled to be invited to the Bristol screening of 𝑆𝑒𝑎, 𝐿𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑦 hosted by Mairead Cahill, WONDEROOM, and Triodos Bank. The film and panel discussion left us inspired yet reflective about the opportunities and challenges in scaling nature-based solutions in the UK. Key takeaways from the event: 𝑺𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔-𝑳𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝑬𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 To inspire action, we need to tell stories that don’t just highlight problems but showcase solutions. A hopeful and inspirational narrative can turn passive observers into active participants and complex challenges into relatable opportunities driving action. 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒅𝒐𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒌: 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒚 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆 Triodos sets a powerful example for financial institutions with a recent €500 million commitment to nature-based solutions. However, this pledge is a drop in the ocean compared to the billions needed globally to reverse biodiversity loss and combat climate change. 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 - 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕? The film highlights transformational initiatives in sea, land, and city environments, proving solutions are within reach. However, scaling these efforts requires a market of buyers, investors, and frameworks. The question remains: 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑦𝑒𝑟𝑠? 𝑊ℎ𝑜 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑠? Nature recovery needs collaboration across all industries - government, business, and communities to turn bold ideas into scalable action. We are incredibly thankful to Mairead and her team for including Belmont Estate in the documentary credits. We welcomed the team to Belmont in December 2023 for a walk around Watercress Farm and discussed everything from our approach to nature recovery to community connection. The short film, which is 24 minutes long and free to access on WaterBear Network, is a perfect insight into some of the nature-based solutions already active in the UK Southwest. #NatureBasedSolutions #Storytelling #Impact #Community #NatureFinance #Bristol #Southwest

What does a nature connection session look like with us? 🌳 At the heart of Watercress Farm is the home of our free nature connection programme. A place for exploration, reconnection and free play for children, families, schools and local organisations within the local community. Watch how Nicola Gliddon, one of the Nature Connection Leads recently took local children and their families on a BE Wild adventure for Halloween. We believe that nature connection is a vital way of inspiring behavioural change. Outdoor play boosts creativity, strengthens immune systems, and enhances problem-solving skills. Young people who regularly play outside build better social skills and have lower stress levels.
