About us
TBIJ is the UK’s largest non-profit investigative news organisation – we’re not on the hunt for clicks and we don’t have shareholders to please. Co-founded by Elaine Potter, one of the female pioneers of investigative journalism, the work we undertake has two purposes: to expose injustices through our deep investigative reporting, and to help spark meaningful change in the world. Even if you’ve never come across us before, there’s a high chance you’ve read our work. Since 2010, we’ve been working with newsrooms across the world to expose corruption and injustice on an international scale. From the LA Times and Die Welt, to Vice and the BBC, we co-publish with our industry partners to make sure the stories get in front of affected communities and those wielding the power to incite change.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has slammed the Federal Reserve for allowing some of the biggest banks in the US to break rules designed to prevent another financial crisis. The criticism follows a whistleblower’s revelation that JPMorgan was intentionally misreporting its trading activity – potentially inflating earnings by billions of dollars and increasing executive pay packages. Such activity appears to violate a set of rules created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to prevent taxpayers from having to bail out banks again. #JPMorgan #banks #finance #money #tax

Led by our Enablers team, the whole TBIJ newsroom came together a few months ago to do something no other group of journalists had ever done before. We got in touch with members of Parliament and asked them to use their parliamentary privilege to help us expose investigations that had been silenced by lawsuits before they could ever be published. It was a massive team effort involving dozens of interviews, hours of legal advice, and a LOT of collaboration. But every minute of it was worth it. Read more about how we managed to pull it off directly from our Enablers team here 🔗 https://bit.ly/4g7oXno #SLAPPs #medialaw #UKpolitics #journalism #corruption

Did you know that you are 30 times more likely to get a urinary tract infection (UTI) if you have a female anatomy? In women, the urethra (the tube that releases urine from the bladder) is on average an inch and a half long – that’s about a fifth the length of a man’s. This makes it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder or kidneys. Globally, over 400 million people suffer from a UTI every year – and up to half are likely to get another within a year. Ahead of Donald Trump’s second presidential term, the country’s top six banks have already left the Net Zero Banking Alliance. Major US asset managers are doing something similar. The changes align with recent protests by Trump and top Republican figures against so-called “woke capitalism” – finance that aims to achieve better environmental, social or governance outcomes. So instead of talking up their green credentials, will banks now start to keep them quiet? And how will this affect climate goals? 👇 #Trump #greenfinance #bigoil #USpolitics

In 2021, Santander bank coordinated a $1bn bond for Peru’s national oil company, PetroPerú, despite having a public green policy. Last year, the Forest Peoples Programme brought leaders from affected Indigenous communities to the UK parliament. There, they urged lawmakers to ban international banks from supporting Amazon oil – a crucial step towards not letting corporations get away with destroying the environment. Apple is putting inaccurate headlines on curated news articles. Meta is planning to flood its social networks with AI bots mimicking humans. Google is pushing AI-driven search that regularly throws up false results. The online information ecosystem has been in critical condition for some years. But now that systems like ChatGPT (which generate convincing but often inaccurate content) are rapidly being integrated into major information channels, things are likely to get worse. Did you know the author of Putin’s People and her publisher were sued by the billionaire and former Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich over the publication of her book? Momentum behind the anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation) movement first took off after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It emerged then that some oligarchs had been weaponising lawsuits to stop public scrutiny. One such instance was when Abramovich sued Catherine Belton and HarperCollins for publishing Putin’s People Find out more about SLAPPs here 🔗 https://bit.ly/3WcnvsM #SLAPPs #investigativejournalism
