I want to talk about ‘Communication’ and ‘Time’ within internal recruitment teams. What often happens within internal teams is that the communication between Owners/Directors and Registered Mangers, Care Managers and Administrators becomes blurry and things get confusing. 👉 “Has anyone called the people who’ve applied on Indeed?” 👉 “Where are we with interviews booked this week?” 👉 “How many people do we need to hire this month?” 👉 “Have we offered the person a role yet?” 👉 “Who is doing face to face interviews this week?” Time to hire is the number 1 reason care companies don’t hire as many care staff as they would like to. Calling people and arranging interviews can often move down the list of things to do and then before you know it, the week has gone and your all blaming candidates for not picking up the phone. Over the last 7 years, I have always called candidates within 24 hours of them applying for a role. No exceptions. This rule has always worked for me. No shows are never a problem. Offer management is perfect. Growth is always evident. Don’t let time let you and your care company down. I hope this helps you and your care team. #carerecruitment #retention

This is me back in 2017 during my first week of training to be a domiciliary Care Assistant. 4 days before this photo was taken I was a Deputy Manager at a supermarket in West Yorkshire. The 3 lovely ladies on this photo had the following experience: 1. Ex Support Worker (complex care) 2. Administration Assitant at a local tennis club. 3. Student nurse All 4 of us ended up passing our first week of training. I loved it. I loved it because the owner was amazing and made me feel welcome every day. This care provider now has 3 locations in Yorkshire. They’re flying high and will continue to grow for a long time. Imagine if they didn’t hire me based on me having no care experience? What care home recruitment crisis? Some crumble in face of the "crisis" while others work doggedly hard to find answers. They put the hours in. Step forward ex dom care assistant Stephen Forster of The Care Social Network who, on my most recent episode of the Care Home PR and Marketing Podcast, reveals... "How I Eliminate All Agency Staff For Care Homes" In the episode Stephen focuses on: 👉 “Why you can recruit ALL your carers via Indeed” Stephen believes care providers need only use Indeed for hiring care workers – and he offers unique insights into optimising job adverts and budgets. “Indeed is 100% a golden ticket," says Stephen. "Learn how to use Indeed you can smash it! One provider I’ve been helping has at least 500% more applications while using the same budget as previous." 👉 Why “it’s now a candidates’ market – so you must strip back your entire recruitment processes to make it work” Stephen addresses how overuse of agency staff can lead to permanent staff being unhappy, which ultimately negatively impacts care. 👉 Why “time-to-hire" is vital: “Often if someone applies for a care job on Indeed the care home will reply three days later, and it’s often a boring ad," says Stephen. "And yet they expect candidates to get back to them!?” “The truth is you must treat applicants with unbelievable respect, like gold dust - and get on the phone to them straight away. “I use a VET (voicemail, email, text) system, and I do this twice per day, per applicant. “Remember, candidates may be applying for 4 or 5 care jobs in one go on Indeed. So you have to be fast. “And you must sell the company ethos to candidates, and why your provider is the best place to work.” 👉 Stephen gives the example of one Lancashire provider with three homes which cut agency usage from 60% to 5% saving over £10,000 a month in agency fees. 👉 Why face-to-face interviews are, in the present recruitment climate, more about “candidates interviewing the care provider than the other way round.” 👉 Why lengthy screenings of applicants via the phone need to be reduced - and face to face interviews should be around one hour. 👉 Why offering jobs on the spot should NOT be considered as “being desperate”. Rather it’s about doing “whatever it takes,” to get the right person to work for you. 👉 No-shows: “Providers complain that potential applicants are not good enough and do not show up – but when I dig deeper it’s because processes are not good enough from the start,” says Stephen.
