About us

Changing law for the better! The Carvalho Consultancy is an award-winning therapy, coaching and training agency. We specialise in working with lawyers and those involved in legal processes. We support lawyers with the ups and downs of life and the job, providing practical, insightful support. And we should know – we’re lawyers ourselves! We are specialists due to our in-depth knowledge of the legal profession and what it’s really like to practice law. Our therapeutic approach and coaching techniques are pragmatic and realistic, borne out of our own life experiences. We also run hugely popular training seminars and workshops for law firms and other organisations on psychology and mental health in the workplace. We understand well the inner workings of law firms. As such, we are uniquely placed to provide bespoke guidance and support to firms on both staff and client-related issues. Our goal is to make the law a more fulfilling and sustainable profession within which to work. Our team includes Tim Rice, who offers both individual and couples therapy. Kate Hall is an individual and couple psychotherapist and a former family solicitor and mediator. We also have Adam Carvalho, a former litigation partner at Farrer & Co who works with us as a coach and foundational therapist. We work with clients remotely and face to face and offer services across the UK with bases in London and the North West.

🥂 As part of our Headline Sponsorship of the LexisNexis UK Family Law Awards 2024, we have been conducting interviews with the inspirational teams and individuals who have been shortlisted, shining a spotlight on their achievements over the last 12 months and beyond. 🏆 The next nominee for ✨Family Law Champion of the Year✨ we spoke to is Annmarie Carvalho from TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy). Annmarie says 'It would mean so much [to win], particularly because the Family Law Champion award is voted for by our peers. It would feel like an endorsement of our mission to bring the worlds of family law and psychology closer together.' Best of luck, Annmarie! #FLA2024 #FamilyLawAwards2024

  • It was a pleasure for our Annmarie Carvalho to return to her former place of work at Farrer & Co again last week, this time working with their Corporate team providing a session on how to preserve your mental health as a corporate lawyer. A tough call, we think! Life as a transactional lawyer can be something of a rollercoaster 🎢. And it’s tricky for our brains 🧠 and our bodies to acclimatise to the very busy periods followed by the inevitable lulls. So we talked about practical ways of managing this. We also brought the team’s wellbeing policies and procedures to life and looked at one of my favourite subjects: collective wellbeing and how we ensure that everyone’s needs are being attended to. Thanks so much to India Benjamin and Beth Balkham for organising and to Jonathan Haley and the team for the warm welcome and enthusiasm. #corporatelaw #psychologyoflaw

  • Does working in a trauma-informed way prevent burn-out? At TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) we believe that understanding psychology and emotions is the key to lawyer wellbeing. Because if you know what you're working with... ....and if you're given effective tools and ethical safe working practices to utilise... ....and a space to process your emotions... ...then you'll end up having more impact and feeling less like a wrung out dishrag at the end of each week. This applies to Pro Bono Lawyers who we're focusing on this #NationalProBonoWeek. But also family lawyers, private client lawyers, employment, clin neg, PI lawyers, the list goes on... Today marks the last of our videos on working as a lawyer in a trauma-informed way. And today our trauma-informed psychotherapist Katie McKenna and I address the age-old problem of how lawyers can look after themselves when working with trauma. At TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) we offer psychologically-informed training, coaching and therapy services, all from therapists and coaches who walked in your shoes! • What does it mean to work in a trauma-informed way? Many people talk about this these days but what does it actually mean? It’s certainly not something that used to form part of our training as lawyers, even for those of us working in the most emotionally-fraught areas of law. Here are just some of the unhappy outcomes from NOT training lawyers to be trauma-informed: 1. Lawyers who don’t know how to create psychologically safe environments for their clients; 2. Clients who are so emotionally dysregulated that they are unable to give informed instructions; 3. Lawyers who are overly directive and who seek to persuade clients (and others) using overly rational and analytical arguments; 4. Lawyers who are not shown how to process and deal with the difficult material and highly-charged emotions they take on through their work; 5. Lawyers who get frustrated and, ultimately, burnt out, as a result of all of the above. So how can one work in a trauma-informed way? Here’s the latest instalment from my discussion with our TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) trauma-informed psychotherapist, Katie McKenna marking pro bono week. I found these chats so interesting. I hope you do too. #traumainformed #WeDoProBono #NationalProBonoWeek https://lnkd.in/e-x6BSbi

  • “Everyone says they’ve got trauma 😞 these days…” I hear this a fair bit from people. And I do understand the sentiment. Our learning about trauma as a society is growing apace. And many things that, in the past, we wouldn’t have thought of as traumatic, we would now put in that category. So what is trauma? And why do lawyers need to know about it? It’s National Pro Bono Week and at TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) we’re passionate about increasing understanding of trauma and about learning how to work with it as lawyers (and cope with it ourselves) This is imporrant for all lawyers. But the particularly those who work with emotionally tricky situations such as pro bono, private client, family, employment, personal injury, medical negligence, the list goes on… So I sat down with our TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) trauma-informed psychotherapist and former lawyer Katie McKenna to discuss this very subject. In this latest short video we discuss what trauma is and the neurobiological effects. Please ignore the ridiculous look on my face in this thumbnail ⬇️ And apologies for our lack of captions (full disclosure: this is due to an IT malfunction/my IT ineptitude - you can decide which is more likely…) #WeDoProBono #NationalProBonoWeek #traumainformed

  • Today is the first day of National Pro Bono Week 2024. While this year's theme is 'The Power of Pro Bono', we at TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) just love to be disruptive 😆 and so we've created our own theme - becoming a trauma-informed pro bono lawyer. To us, while all of pro bono should be celebrated this week and every week, it is crucial that more is done to ensure that pro bono work is practiced in a trauma-informed way. That includes: - learning about the effect of distress, stress and trauma on the brain and how we process information - learning and practising ways of interviewing clients in trauma-informed ways - finding ways to decompress and process the difficult material we take on in this work. Many (often junior) lawyers starting out in pro bono work have day job in areas of law which are much less emotionally intense. So it's particularly important that they have training, therapy/reflective practice to support them in this work. We'll be releasing a new video every day this week on trauma and its impact on our clients and the lawyers themselves. Today, our first day, we're introducing our new trauma-informed psychotherapist and former lawyer Katie McKenna and talking about how she came to do this work and what it means to her. Enjoy! https://lnkd.in/ease_dQt #traumainformed #psychologyoflaw #ProBonoWeek #WeDoProBono

  • The good news just keeps on coming for us at TCC (The Carvalho Consultancy) 🎉! We are delighted to welcome Trish Jones to our team today. Trish is a hugely experienced counsellor and corporate trainer. And a former lawyer! Trish trained at Norton Rose Fulbright before working at Baker McKenzie and then working in-house for a number of years. She then retrained to become a counsellor and has been working therapeutically for many years, even now leading the psychotherapy training at the centre she herself trained at! We are so thrilled to have Trish join us. She brings a wealth of experience but also huge amounts of creativity and a great sense of humour. Trish will be working with both our individual lawyer clients and those who book in with us via their firm’s in-house support scheme. As a former corporate, commercial and in-house lawyer, we envisage she will be particularly helpful to those working in these areas. She will also be involved in our corporate training work. Get in touch with her on trish@carvalhotherapy.com or via our EA, Katie Bieneman on indo@carvalhotherapy.com to book in. We can’t wait to work with her. Welcome, Trish! https://lnkd.in/ezqGeVmV
