About us
Founded in 1826, the Deaf Academy provides a school and Further Education college for Deaf young people aged 5-25, and currently has 50 students. We are located in Devon, but our unique provision and specialist expertise mean that students come from across the UK to attend, with many using our residential care facilities. In September 2020 the Deaf Academy opened the doors of its new home in the vibrant seaside town of Exmouth, just a short drive or train journey from Exeter and 20 minutes from junction 30 of the M5. Designed around the principles of inspiration, visual communication and inclusivity, this truly 21st Century Deaf school and college campus places the Academy at the cutting edge of Deaf education in Europe. nspired by US-developed DeafSpace architecture, light and colour permeate the Academy building, clear sightlines and wide corridors enable signers to communicate and acoustics are carefully managed. Meanwhile, large classrooms and modern therapeutic facilities are designed to complement each other and provide state of the art education for Deaf young people whatever their additional needs might be. Our new residential accommodation is modern, well equipped and, above all, provides a true home from home for our young people. The inspiring buildings underpin our objectives to build confidence in our students, show them their value in the world and help them believe they can achieve anything they want to.

Two special guests visited the Deaf Academy last week, meeting students and staff and learning about the quality of our provision. British Deaf Association (BDA) Chief Executive Rebecca Mansell MCIOF was delighted to see our new puffin road crossing in action, after the BDA generously donated £500 towards our fundraising campaign for its installation. David Reed MP spent time with students in our residential communal areas and pledged to support the Academy with our charitable and fundraising objectives. We are grateful to our guests for their ongoing partnership support, especially as we gear up to our 200th anniversary celebrations in 2026. #BSLInOurHands #DeafEducation

Our students and staff marked the opening of the new pedestrian road crossing outside the Academy with a special celebration event. Local councillors, representatives from community groups, and individual fundraisers were invited to the event to celebrate the installation of the puffin crossing on the busy stretch of Douglas Avenue; marking the end of a student-led campaign spanning several years. East Devon’s Highways and Traffic Orders Committee approved plans to install the £100,000 crossing in April this year, after lobbying from students. The Deaf Academy committed to raising £30,000 towards this cost because a puffin crossing has extra features and sensors which detect when people are walking across it, making it safer for users. Students and staff, plus the Academy’s Trustees and Governors, wish to thank all the generous donors and the whole community that has rallied around to support our campaign. #PuffinCrossingAppeal #DeafEducation
