“The climate crisis is here and as engineers we need to accelerate our actions to transition our built environment to zero carbon.” We are excited to launch the Engineers Reuse Collective. We have been founded by six like minded engineering practices, Buro Happold, Civic Engineers, Elliott Wood , Heyne Tillett Steel, Webb Yates Engineers and Whitby Wood - as a not-for-profit initiative focused on accelerating the reuse of materials in the built environment, with the goal of achieving a Net Zero Carbon future. Our collective is supported by The Institution of Structural Engineers. Through knowledge-sharing, roadmap production, advocacy and collaboration, we’re working to remove barriers and push for industry-wide adoption of the circular economy. The built environment industry contributes around 25% of the UK's carbon emissions, with embodied carbon making up a significant portion of this figure. By championing reuse and circular economy principles, tERC aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions while promoting sustainable practices across the sector. Could your company be our next member? We’re looking for engineering practices to join the movement and help shape the future of sustainable construction. About us
The Engineers Reuse Collective (ERC) is a not-for-profit group of practising engineers championing, accelerating and delivering the reuse of materials in the built environment to support the transition of the UK’s built environment to Net Zero Carbon. Our mission is to dramatically increase the reuse of building materials, with minimal reprocessing, to support the transition to circular economy principles and to urgently reduce the carbon intensity of the built environment. To achieve this we will: - Promote and implement the reuse of building materials through information sharing and positive engagement with stakeholders and the wider industry. - Actively demonstrate and share knowledge of effective solutions, overcoming barriers, success stories and lessons learnt. - Challenge, encourage, and champion our clients and those we work with to maximise the reuse of materials on our projects. - Provide a proactive, influencing, and collective voice for engineers to promote increased material reuse.

An insightful article from Will Arnold. Yes, the news can be depressing, but positive action is happening and as engineers we can (and must) continue to push, lead and champion for solutions that “use less stuff”. #wasteless #reusemore #grabthataxe 🪓
🚨We've broken the climate: now what?🚨 Working in climate action has its highs and lows, and the last couple of months have seen some strong lows. 🤒We've passed 1.5 degrees, 🫣The US has pulled out of the Paris Agreement, 🥵And the last 12 months of weather has broken record after record (in a bad way). But, at the same time, there are reasons to remain hopeful! ⚖️Total emissions are showing signs of levelling off, 📉We continue to see significant investment in steel and cement, 🌱Grassroots action continues to drive change. This short article I wrote for The Institution of Structural Engineers digs into a little more depth on the above, and reminds us of the need to keep fighting for change. Read the full article for free at: https://lnkd.in/dQmtNN4w This all reminds me of a great quote about #hope by Rebecca Solnit: 💬💬Hope is not a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky. It is an axe you break down doors with in an emergency. Hope should shove you out the door, because it will take everything you have to steer the future away from endless war, from the annihilation of the earth's treasures and the grinding down of the poor and marginal... To hope is to give yourself to the future - and that commitment to the future is what makes the present inhabitable.💬💬 Grab that axe! 🪓 #climateaction #netzero #biodiversity #decarbonisation #embodiedcarbon #steel #concrete #structuralengineering #architecture #engineering #design

More new members! We're delighted that Price & Myers have joined the Collective. Their ethos "to do more than simply lead on matters of sustainability in construction, but to advocate and take action" fits perfectly with our aims. Here's one of their projects where several solutions were provided to demonstrate how the client’s requirements could be met with varying degrees of building adaptation, as compared to complete demolition and rebuild. The result was the retention of 75% of structure, avoiding new transfer structures and reusing the foundations. #reusemore #collaboration #sharingknowledge https://lnkd.in/eshv6a9t

We have a waste problem. The construction industry is the largest generator of waste in the UK. And we are generating increasing amounts of waste. Between 2012 and 2022, construction and demolition waste generated in England increased by 22%. We are also consuming ever greater quantities of materials. Between 2012 and 2022, UK consumption of ready-mixed concrete increased by 7%. And UK consumption of constructional steelwork increased by 15%. We need to change our mindset, culture and behaviour. We need to waste less and reuse more. The Engineers Reuse Collective is working to champion, promote and accelerate reuse in the built environment. We are proactive in demonstrating that reuse can be achieved. Learn more and join us at terc.org.uk. #wasteless #reusemore

We're delighted to welcome SD Engineers as new members of the Collective. Their Mary Ward Centre project is an excellent example of where clever engineering and determination are utilised to achieve outstanding reuse. Earmarked for demolition and new build, they were able to demonstrate how the existing structure and foundations could be reused with minimal intervention to achieve this dramatic transformation of a derelict property. #reusemore #collaboration #sharingknowledge https://lnkd.in/e_FwAnRC

We're delighted to welcome Conisbee to the Collective. Reuse is not just about reusing building elements, it also encompasses reusing buildings. Here's a Conisbee project showcasing the refurbishment of a 1970's office building where investigations and analysis of the existing structure was carried out, enabling the design to utilise the existing structure and its foundations in their entirety. #reusemore #collaboration #sharingknowledge https://lnkd.in/e3MttBmC

An excellent, enlightening and engaging evening at our Talking Reuse event last night. Fantastic to hear from Aisling Reynolds and Robert McCullough from Keltbray, and Robert Millard from De Construction Solutions presenting and discussing practical issues and their experiences with reusing structural steel. Some excellent examples but also some very useful points for us as engineers to facilitate and achieve greater reuse on our projects. Thanks to Anna Beckett from Buro Happold for chairing and hosting, and to all who attended in-person and online. A great set of presentations and panel questions which got us all thinking! #reusemore #reusesteel #collaboration #sharingknowledge

We are delighted that Thornton Tomasetti have also joined The Engineers Reuse Collective. And here's an excellent example of reusing foundations whilst doubling the floor area supported. https://lnkd.in/e_YQv4V4

We are delighted that Cundall have joined the Collective to push for and accelerate reuse in the built environment. Cundall have set themselves ambitious targets and recognise the cultural transformation and collaboration which is needed to normalise reuse across the industry. We are very much looking forward to their input and support. https://lnkd.in/eGBKFXCz #reusemore #collaboration
