About us
Working collaboratively and building positive relationships with children, their families and educators. We are a partnership of people and organisations who are inspired and guided by the principles and pedagogy of Friedrich Froebel. Friedrich Froebel was a nineteenth-century German educator and creator of the kindergarten and is arguably the most significant of the pioneers of early years education and care. Froebel ‘wanted to educate people to be free, to think, to take action for themselves’ (Froebel in Lilley 1967:41). Froebel created the first kindergarten, a place where children can grow and develop at their own pace, nurtured by knowledgeable and supportive adults. Froebel saw children as active, curious, creative learners who learn best through activity, play, talk, and self-reflection. They thrive when they are emotionally secure and in close relationships with others, including the family and wider community. Froebel rejected the tradition of teacher-led education which viewed children as passive learners. Rather he believed in education through activity and enquiry. He saw the earliest years of a child’s life as the most formative and play as the leading form of development. These ideas and their practical applications in the kindergarten were radical concepts at that time.

Fantastic EECERA conference last week in Brighton with many inspiring, thought-provoking presentations. One notable keynote amongst others was delivered by Dr. Richard Horton OBE, editor-in-chief of The Lancet. He gave an impassioned speech with concerning data on global child and maternal health. He called us all to do more with urgency. #EECERA @sallycave6 @Gfdnurserysch

Read what Froebelian expert, Rachna Joshi, has to say about inclusion, family and community in her monthly blog about aspects of Froebelian pedagogy at Guildford Nursery School: https://buff.ly/3VOISze During a visit in January, Rachna discovered that educators who have the principles of starting where the child is, respecting where they are, and valuing their contributions, culture and languages underpinned in their practice, are able to create an atmosphere of genuine care and nurture for children and their families which is fundamental in supporting children’s identity and sense of self.

For the past 30 days, our partner Seven Stars Kindergarten has undertaken an exciting journey through 30 days of Froebel, a fun and engaging event created by Guildford Nursery School in the UK. This initiative celebrates the legacy of Froebel in early childhood education, offering a new activity each day for 30 days. It's a wonderful opportunity for everyone to explore, learn, and grow together. Why not try it at home or in your setting.
