📰 The consequences of floating offshore wind farms (FLOW) on life throughout the marine food chain will be explored in a new study led by #LyellCentre researchers at Heriot-Watt University. The 4-year FRONTLINE project - supported by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council - will employ state-of-the-art technologies and seabird and fisheries tracking on the Celtic Sea to find out how the rapid expansion of wind farm infrastructures - vital for achieving global #NetZero targets - could affect the ocean's natural ecosystem. 🌊 🪽 The team will harness seabirds' 'animal oceanography' abilities to provide a birds'-eye view on changing seas and turbine perception to help understand whether wind farm structures create collision hazards, which could, in turn, affect their foraging habits. 📜 Associate Professor in Environmental Law at the #LyellCentre Dr Daniela Diz was part of a team of technical and legal experts who recently participated in the passing of an historic UN decision to protect marine biodiversity. 🤝 At #COP16, the 2024 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference, 196 parties agreed on new modalities for describing areas important for global marine and coastal biodiversity, a decision that will pave the way for the implementation of marine conservation and management strategies to address biodiversity and climate crises. 🗣 Dani, who has been involved in CBD negotiations for the past 14 years, said: “This agreement heralds an important mandate for greater conservation, sustainable management and protection of marine ecosystems, without which, the foundation of life on our planet couldn’t function.” Find out more on our website: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eQhJP2be 🌍 The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was adopted in 1992 and signed at the UN Conference on Environment and Development at the ‘Earth Summit’ in Rio, where the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was also approved, leading to the annual Conference of Parties (COP) with member nations focused on solutions to tackle climate change. This year’s #COP29 takes place from 11-22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. We are successfully running our #geoenergy #MSc (Subsurface Energy Systems) for the 5th year now. It is the first one in the UK integrating #CCS, #geothermal and underground #hydrogen storage, along with necessary geoscience and engineering skills like fluid dynamics, reservoir geomechanics or geophysics. The majority of our students were successful in finding jobs in the #energy #transition and we would be keen on providing more students with this opportunity. Please join us for a live introductioon and Q&A on what this MSc has to offer and how it will help you developing your skills further to make you a leader in the #energy #transition. The event will take place on November 27th at 10 am GMT. Please register here to get the meeting link: https://lnkd.in/ejEJaptZ And all details on our course can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ev2YHn55 Hannah Menke, Uisdean Nicholson, Florian Doster, Alexis Cartwright-Taylor, The Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Sciences, Heriot-Watt University

Associate Professor in International Law at the #LyellCentre Dr Daniela Diz is continuing her globally significant work to protect ocean biodiversity across international borders. 🌍 Next week she will attend the UN Biodiversity Conference in Columbia, during which she'll support the identification of 300 new 'Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas' (EBSAs) as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The framework sets out global targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss on land and in marine environments. 🌊 Dani said: “These areas are all over the world, including the Northeast Atlantic, Northwest Atlantic, Southeast Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Pacific and Arctic. Some of them are important because they are very unique or unspoiled. Others might be important spawning grounds or habitats for certain species. "The most important thing is agreeing on a list of gaps or areas that need further attention from the Convention"." https://lnkd.in/e2Gtrzsx 💡Learn more about how Dani is contributing to protecting marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) at the Lyell Centre web pages: https://lnkd.in/eKmiKr4q 📺 https://lnkd.in/eZfEvXCU Heriot-Watt University | Heriot-Watt GRID | #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalLaw #MarineSciences #EarthSciences #SustainableFutures #HWUSustainability #GlobalResearch #GlobalImpact #TheLyellCentre
