Our Electricity Networks Manager, Jody O'Boyle, is currently on the island of Saint Helena, assisting their Utilities Regulatory Authority to review and develop a regulation programme, which will include increasing their use of renewable generation. With a population of around 4,100, there is only one wind farm, solar farm, power station and water treatment plant on the island. Although on a much smaller scale than Jody is used to when regulating Northern Ireland’s electricity network, his experience and learnings from over 16 years working in regulation have been extremely welcomed by Saint Helena. It is a privilege for Northern Ireland’s Utility Regulator to be asked to help develop another country’s system of regulation. Once Jody returns to Northern Ireland, he’ll continue to support Saint Helena Utilities Regulatory Authority remotely throughout the year.

NEWS: SONI revises expectations for Winter period We have published a revised assessment for the Winter period following damage caused to one of Northern Ireland’s major power stations during Storm Darragh in December 2024. Our latest assessments show that we still expect there to be sufficient generation to meet consumer demand in normal operating conditions, but the power system will experience tighter margins for the remainder of the Winter period. We would like to reassure consumers that the risk of any disruption remains low. While it is possible the grid may experience more system alerts because the margins between demand and supply are tighter, our expert grid control engineers continue to monitor the situation closely and have a range of tried and tested plans in place to protect the electricity system and manage any challenges should they arise.
