Changing the way Pernicious Anaemia is diagnosed and treated

About us

We are an International Charity (charity reg. no. 1147839) based in Bridgend, South Wales. The society was founded in 2005 by the current Executive Chairman, Martyn Hooper. The original aim of the society was simply to provide an easy to understand explanation of Pernicious Anaemia to newly diagnosed patients – at the time there was no such information available. Our mission: To secure a full and comprehensive review of the way in which Pernicious Anaemia is diagnosed and treated that will lead to more timely diagnoses and better treatment. We provide information, help and support to sufferers of Pernicious Anaemia (PA), including their families and friends and strive to improve current and future diagnosis and treatment of Pernicious Anaemia by: providing information to health professionals, engaging in research with the health research community, lobbying decision makers and working hard to change the way in which PA is diagnosed and treated.

  • On 21 January at 6:30pm we will be hosting a webinar on the need for an international treatment standard for B12 deficiency. Based on the paper published in 2024 by Emil Buhl, Bettina Borre Buhl, Linda Skibsted Kornerup & Ebba Nexø, Bettina Borre Buhl reports on the findings of their research review that focuses on current practice predominantly relying on more than 50 years old data. What is still recommended and why are these guidelines so often not followed? What is the relevance of re-testing and why symptoms rather than normalising blood test results are so important to resolve for the patient. This seminar will review the findings of the report and discuss what clinical studies and strategies are really needed going forward to improve the treatment of people with Pernicious Anaemia and B12 deficiency symptoms. For more information, please see the event page at https://lnkd.in/e5Tq3QmS To purchase a ticket for this event, please go to https://lnkd.in/ejNSFw9j Ticket price is £5 for #PAS members and £15 for non-members.

  • As the year draws to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful members, supporters, and volunteers. 2024 has been a year of progress and dedication for the Pernicious Anaemia Society. From strengthening our support networks to making strides in education and research, we’ve achieved so much together. Here are a few highlights from our Annual Review in the latest newsletter: 🎉 We successfully campaigned around the new NICE guidelines on B12 deficiency, even making it onto ITV News! 📝 Our educational efforts are expanding, with new resources for healthcare professionals and patients available through our shop. 🤝 Our support groups have grown globally, with new groups in Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. 📢 At the third Vitamin B12 Symposium in Cambridge, we connected with global experts to discuss advancements in B12 research. We look forward to building on these foundations in 2025, with more initiatives to improve awareness, support, and treatment for those affected by Pernicious Anaemia. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a healthy new year. Thank you for being part of our journey. #PAS #PerniciousAnaemia   #B12deficiency #vitaminB12 #HealthAwareness #LifewithPA #PASociety #PAS12 #MakeADonation #HelpUsHelpYou

  • Whilst the autoimmune condition pernicious anaemia itself can’t be prevented, you can take steps to be proactive about your health and reduce the risk of B12 deficiency. Here’s what to be aware of: 🩺 Regular Check-Ups: If you have a family history of pernicious anaemia or autoimmune diseases, make regular check-ups a priority. 💡 Know the Symptoms: Fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and numbness or tingling in your hands or feet can all be signs. If you notice any, consult a healthcare professional. 🔍 Manage Underlying Conditions: If you have autoimmune conditions like type 1 diabetes or thyroid disease, work with your doctor to keep them under control. 💊 Monitor Medications: Certain medications may impact B12 absorption, so discuss any concerns with your doctor. 🔗 Awareness is Key: Remember, pernicious anaemia is an autoimmune condition that can sometimes go under-recognised. Staying informed and aware of these factors can help you advocate for your health. If you’re looking for more information and support, join the Pernicious Anaemia Society to connect with others and access resources designed to help!
