We provide a platform for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to learn about and actually participate in the policy world. These students will be able to diagnose problems in local and national society and then propose viable policy options to solve them.

Today I had the opportunity, alongside Saanvi Sachdev, to present the research we have conducted thus far with the team at The Peterloo Institute at the 2024 Politics and International Relations Undergraduate Research Conference. It was a great opportunity to discuss our work - ‘Refugee integration in Manchester: A study of the delivery of refugee support services from the perspectives of staff and volunteer workers’ - with the wider politics community, and to be able to answer questions from peers and professors. We can’t wait to be able to share our paper upon completion.

🎓 Exciting Day Presenting Our Research at the UG Politics Conference! 🌟 Today was an absolute highlight as I was privileged to present a research alongside my peer Jessica Tubb from the Peterloo Institute at the UG Politics Conference at The University of Manchester, organised by the Politics Department and Juncture: The University of Manchester Undergraduate Politics Journal. Delving deep into our research, we explored our research aims with the purpose of extending the definition of the refugee, as one doesn’t just stop being a refugee once receiving that status. Even though they might be in a relatively “safer” place now, the definitions fail to acknowledge the subjectivity of lived experiences (and the life that is carried in the new country). In our research, we want to fill the gap in the existing literature by understanding the livelihoods of the refugees and the social marginalisation they encounter, the policies that shape their livelihoods and how they get used to living in a new environment. It's truly inspiring to be part of such a vibrant academic community where ideas are exchanged, challenged, and evolved. The conference provided a platform to engage with fellow students presenting their dissertations and research projects which sparked insightful discussions. I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the brilliant minds at the Peterloo Institute and to contribute to the ongoing discourse in political studies. A big thank you to everyone who attended our presentation and for the invaluable feedback received. This week, members of the Peterloo Institute, had the incredible opportunity to attend the esteemed Harry Street Lecture at The University of Manchester. We were honoured to hear from Professor Aoife Nolan, a distinguished voice in human rights law, who delivered an enlightening discussion on Human Rights in the context of the cost of living and the Polycrisis. Professor Nolan's insights into the complexities of human rights challenges during these critical times were not only thought-provoking but also inspirational. Her analysis provided us with a deeper understanding of the urgent need for global cooperation and innovative solutions to address the multifaceted issues we face today. We are immensely grateful to Professor Nolan for sharing her expertise and perspectives with us. Our Head of Research in the Structural Racism department, Sheu Hirst, has published an excellent piece on current geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. Essential work and a highly important read!
Although Iran may seek to engage the US slightly below the threshold for direct confrontation, its strategy is inherently unstable and chaotic, perpetuating the threat of regional escalation and conflict. The US on the other hand, under strain from the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and mindful of an emerging geopolitical struggle with China in the Indo-Pacific, will timorously uphold its position as regional hegemon and protect its interests, wary of the political consequences for any miscalculations.
