The Regional Studies Association is a learned society concerned with the analysis of regions and regional issues.
About us
Regions are a key spatial scale for examining the nature and impacts of political, economic, social and environmental change and innovation. The Regional Studies Association works with its international membership to facilitate the highest standards of theoretical development, empirical analysis and policy debate of issues at this sub-national scale, incorporating both the urban and rural and different conceptions of space such as city-regions and interstitial spaces. We are, for example, interested in issues of economic development and growth, conceptions of territory and its governance and in thorny problems of equity and injustice. The Association’s journals, magazines and books, along with our global-to-local series of conferences and events position us as a key forum in shaping and disseminating advances in regional studies and science. Members come from economics, geography, political science, planning and sociology backgrounds. Most work in academia but many are working in policy and practice, and membership is truly global. Our great strengths include our embrace of multiple methodologies from quantitative to qualitative, the use of thoughtful comparative research, and boundary spanning between academia and policy and practice. These—and our vibrant mix of members, including active participation from student members and early career researchers—help us to create a dynamic and pro-active environment in which to challenge existing thinking and push the boundaries of knowledge and practice.

[Call for contributions] Towards #RSAPorto25 I am happy to come back to Regional Studies Association with excellent colleagues (Florence Benoit, Julien Ravet, Ron Boschma, Pierre-Alexandre Balland) discussing Europe's R&I Divide at the next conference in #Porto in May 2025. We want to gather analytical contributions, research papers, and policy analysis to better understand the regional R&I divide, what to do, and how it affects Europe's competitiveness and resilience. We know R&I activities are unevenly distributed across space, our interest is on the drivers and barriers of their evolution. Please have a look at the Special Session 'SS52: Tackling Europe's Regional R&I Divide: Analysis, Policies and Practices'. https://lnkd.in/eTemudpT!

Earlier this month, the RSA's Nordic community came together for the 9th #NORSA Division Conference “Regional Outcomes of Global Challenges in the Nordic Countries”. Organised by the Institute of Sociology at the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences, in partnership with Vilniaus universitetas / Vilnius University and the Nordic Division of the Regional Studies Association the conference took place in Vilnius between 2nd- 3rd May 2024. The conference was supported by the Vilnius City Municipality Administration (www.govilnius.lt/ Go Vilnius) and the Regional Studies Association and featured three invited plenary speakers: Jiri Blazek (Charles University, Czech Republic) presented on the roles of system-level agency on the development of regional industries, Maria Tsouri (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway) highlighted the relationships between innovation networks and green transition and the final plenary presentation was by Tiit Tammaru (Tartu University, Estonia) on trends of counter-urbanisation in the context of digital transition and decreasing urban housing affordability. Delegates represented all countries of the RSA’s Nordic Division (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden) as well as further afield with guests from Hungary and Poland. The conference presented opportunities to discuss and debate the most recent issues concerned with regional studies and regional policy in Northern European countries and ample networking opportunities resulting in strengthened scientific links across the Baltic Sea and beyond. Plenaries and paper sessions were accompanied by social events such as an informal pre-conference get-together, a conference dinner, a visit to the premises of Vilnius City Council for great views over the city and an energising walking tour with more vistas over the city, interesting insights and anecdotes and sampling local hospitality. Conference photos can be accessed on our Facebook album at https://lnkd.in/e3FbKUWR. The next NORSA Conference will take place in 2026 and details on the NORSA Division and its activities can be found at https://lnkd.in/eAYX6ZBB.
