To celebrate #WorldAnteaterDay our conservation programme manager Dr Helen Taylor spoke to The Ethicalist Magazine about the biggest threats facing giant anteaters in the wild 🐜 As a wildlife conservation charity, we have been supporting Icas - Wild Animal Conservation Institute in Brazil for over a decade to protect the species and their habitats from fire, highways and pesticides. We are calling for tighter restrictions on fireworks following the death of Roxie, our endangered red panda kit, at Edinburgh Zoo on bonfire night. Our expert vet team believe it's likely that three-month-old Roxie died due to stress caused by fireworks in the local area. Fireworks can cause fear and distress for pets, livestock and animals in zoos, so it is essential that the UK government and The Scottish Government tighten restrictions on their sale and use. We support calls to ban the sale of fireworks to the public, with displays only permitted at organised events. These restrictions would help avoid devastating consequences for animals like Roxie while ensuring that people can still enjoy celebrations. We’re honoured to be part of Arival | Activate Edinburgh – the first Arival conference dedicated to the UK, Ireland, and Nordic regions! This gathering brings together leaders and innovators to shape the future of in-destination experiences across Northern Europe, and we’re thrilled Edinburgh Zoo is one of the chosen hosts for an experiential learning session. In our session, we’ll share insights into the development of our group experiences, followed by a hands-on activity that lets guests dive into our approach to engagement and conservation

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland reposted this
🙏 Thank you so much to The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland for the fantastic time we had in Scotland, meeting their team and supporters! 👉 Last Monday, Icas' founder Arnaud Desbiez was invited by our longtime partner The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to give two talks about our favorite species: the giant armadillo and the giant anteater. 💚 The meetings happened at the Edinburgh Zoo & the Highland Wildlife Park where Arnaud could meet many of the visitors & supporters of the parks, and present our conservation actions which the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has been supporting for many years. 🙌 It was really great to exchange with the public, and we take this opportunity to thank the visitors once again, as well as the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) for their amazing support! #zoo #conservation #partership

Moo Deng? Who deng? Introducing… Haggis 🏴 🦛 Otto and Gloria welcomed an ADORABLE pygmy hippo calf at Edinburgh Zoo on Wednesday 30 October. She is doing well, but we’ll be keeping the hippo house closed for the time being so that our expert keepers can keep a close eye on mum and baby at this sensitive time 🌎 While Thailand’s Moo Deng has become a viral icon, it’s important to remember that pygmy hippos are endangered and incredibly rare - it is estimated that just 2,500 remain in the wild 💚 To celebrate her birth we have launched a prize draw where one lucky winner will get the chance to win a UNIQUE pygmy hippo experience. FIRST EVER baby medicinal leeches born in our dedicated breeding for release facility at Highland Wildlife Park 👏🩸 20 wriggly juveniles have hatched so far - MUCH more than we were expecting at such an early stage in this vital project! If this success continues then eventually, we hope to have enough healthy leeches to begin releasing them into the wild and start new populations in suitable lochs around the country, in partnership with Buglife and Species on the Edge.
