The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, introduced in Parliament this week, aims to ensure a child-centred approach in government by prioritising the needs of children and preventing vulnerable children from falling through the cracks. Key provisions of the bill include: -A new home education register and unique numbers for pupils – to stop children falling through the cracks -New rules on home education to protect vulnerable children -Stronger role for schools and professionals in safeguarding decisions, to make sure help can be mobilised for every child that needs it. 16 December 2024-UK Online Safety Regulations come into force from Ofcom -First codes of practice and guidance published -Providers have 3 months to complete illegal harms risk assessments -Ofcom has set out more than 40 safety measures for platforms to introduce from March 2025 You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/e5-fN7tu

The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel: annual report 2023 to 2024 is out now. The Report looks at the child safeguarding system, based on serious child safeguarding incidents occurring between April 2023-March 2024. It highlights key themes and patterns in practice for national government and local safeguarding partners to improve the protection of vulnerable children. Free Workshop for Safer Members-Talking to Children Who May Have Been Harmed, Tuesday 11 February, 10am-11.30am, online. The aim of this workshop is to give you confidence in talking to children who are disclosing safeguarding issues. In this one hour workshop, led by an ex-police officer, we will look at the importance of approaching these conversations in the right way, how to reassure a child, the types of questions you might ask and those you should avoid, how to record your conversation. Appropriate language guide: on child exploitation and abuse The Children’s Society has updated its guidance for professionals working with children focusing on how language matters when talking about child exploitation. The guidance highlights how the language used by professionals and society can reinforce the shame and guilt felt by victims or survivors, create barriers between professionals and young people, and imply, intentionally or unintentionally, that a victim is responsible for their own abuse. It also emphasises the importance of an open and reflective attitude to ensure that our language evolves in a way that supports and respects all individuals.
