Appropriate language guide: on child exploitation and abuse The Children’s Society has updated its guidance for professionals working with children focusing on how language matters when talking about child exploitation. The guidance highlights how the language used by professionals and society can reinforce the shame and guilt felt by victims or survivors, create barriers between professionals and young people, and imply, intentionally or unintentionally, that a victim is responsible for their own abuse. It also emphasises the importance of an open and reflective attitude to ensure that our language evolves in a way that supports and respects all individuals.
