About us
The Scottish Gallery is one of the oldest commercial art galleries in Scotland and celebrated 175 Years of Art in 2017. The Gallery plans a monthly programme of exhibitions highlighting emerging, established and historical artists. Established in South St. David Street, Edinburgh by Aitken Dott in 1842 as "Gilders, Framers, and Artists' Colourmen", the firm, as it does today, also exhibited and sold work by the leading Scottish artists of the day. As all areas of the business grew, larger premises were found in Castle Street in 1860 and a new dedicated gallery space was opened in 1897 as "The Scottish Gallery". The Gallery has been situated on Dundas Street since 1992 and became employee owned in 2019.

The latest guest on the Material Matters podcast is the excellent Mark Hearld. Mark is an artist and designer who is fascinated by flora and fauna and has worked in a range of different media – including lithographic and linocut prints, painting, ceramics, textiles and tapestry. However, he is best known for his collage pieces. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art, he has curated installations and exhibitions at York Art Gallery and Compton Verney and is an avid collector of objects. Over the years, he has been a huge advocate for the importance of mid-Twentieth century British artists such as Edward Bawden and Eric Ravillious and the role of craft in the fine art world. Another edition of Mark’s book, Raucous Invention – The Joy of Making, will be published by Thames and Hudson in 2025. In this episode we talk about: his love of paper; his need to be around other people when he works; collaborating with Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios and The Scottish Gallery on a new series of tapestries; the process behind his collage work; the ‘mystery, poetry, joy and darkness’ of Hans Christian Andersen; why collage is like stepping onto a dance floor; writing a collage manifesto; how edges contain exuberance; having imposter syndrome at the Royal College of Art; and swimming against the art world’s tide for many years. Christina Jansen has been featured in this month’s Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine, ‘Art at home’ 💫 “Long before she was the managing director at The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, when she was just a teenager at a house party, Christina spotted a printer’s tray stuffed with knick-knacks hanging on the bathroom wall. "I just loved it," she recalls. “I thought, ‘Ahh. So this is what you do with all the tiny little things you acquire and don’t want to throw away’.” And of course, she is featured wearing Malcolm Appleby jewellery! You can try on and buy Malcolm’s work in The Gallery as part of our current jewellery show The New Baroque, until 23 November. photography: Gabriela Silveira Photography

As winter draws near and the nights grow longer, we're excited to offer a online event on Thursday 7th November at 6pm! Join artist, broadcaster, and author Lachlan Goudie for a special talk where he’ll share insights into his new exhibition at The Scottish Gallery, and discuss the legacy of The Scottish Colourists, especially J.D. Fergusson, whose journey to the south of France in 1913 was driven by a similar passion for light and colour.
