Bonnie Chiu, the Managing Director at The Social Investment Consultancy (TSIC) highlighted four critical areas where social enterprises can make a sustained impact on Donella Meadows’ systems-change framework. She urged a shift towards a world where every business, not just social enterprises, considers social and environmental outcomes alongside financial returns. Bonnie also emphasised the importance of collaboration in realising this vision, reminding us that lasting change is achieved through strong partnerships. Congratulations to our MD Bonnie Chiu!
So honoured and humbled to win the Women of the Future Programme #2024Awards #Entrepreneur category last night in #London, in recognition of my work at The Social Investment Consultancy (TSIC). Thank you to judges Gaby Heppner-Logan and Emma Sergeant for trusting me! When I moved to the UK 11 years ago, I never thought that I could continue to pursue my entrepreneurial endeavour, let alone building and scaling multiple organisations in the #socialimpact space. Supporters I have met through Women of the Future have been instrumental in my journey - thank you Pinky Lilani CBE DL Kim Morrish Deepa Shah and many others. Yet, I’m still reminded every day that less than 1% of venture capital funding goes to female founders, and even when I tried to raise funding, my business is seen as too risky or niche. But female entrepreneurs are not deterred. It was great to learn from fellow shortlisted entrepreneurs, Amelia Miller, Iola Nguyen, Katherine Stennett - who are all showing that impact and purpose should be at the core of all businesses, not just at the fringes. Last but not least, thanks to my supportive husband for taking care of our daughter so that I could have the evening out!

At the recent SEEChange Conference organised by Cambio Consultancy and Bath Spa University, TSIC's Managing Director Bonnie Chiu delivered a keynote on the unique role social enterprises play in balancing profit with purpose. As Bonnie shared, social enterprises in the UK, making up 1 in 42 businesses, are pioneering this balance. They lead with inclusivity, with women representing 50% of leadership and 14% led by ethnic minorities, far exceeding the norms in traditional enterprises. In her speech, Bonnie encouraged the audience to imagine a world where all businesses not just social enterprises consider social and environmental impact alongside financial returns. Bonnie Chiu, Managing Director at The Social Investment Consultancy (TSIC), in this reflection from the SEEChange Conference, sheds light on the unique role of #SocialEnterprises in aligning profit with a purpose. Bonnie challenges us to imagine a future where all businesses, not just social enterprises, prioritise social and environmental impact alongside financial success. Our Senior Researcher Claudia Useche Trujillo in this follow-up blog reflects on recent events in the United Kingdom, and how these riots represent more than isolated local unrest and mirror the interconnected challenges faced globally. She added that Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests to the movements for justice in Santiago de Chile, tackle shared issues of inequality, discrimination, and economic hardship. Claudia highlights how grassroots organisations are on the frontlines, working to build bridges and foster understanding, noting that refugee support groups in Greece and women’s collectives in Latin America are leading the charge against gender-based violence. Initiatives like urban farming projects in Detroit inspiring similar efforts in Johannesburg and Mumbai demonstrate how shared knowledge and digital platforms can unite communities for positive change.
