Well worth a read and brilliant to see genuine and undiluted feedback from colleagues reflected so clearly in the recommendations - another step in the right direction on this long road to eliminating the disability employment gap and a welcome boost to all of us working so hard across sectors, agencies and multiple localities to make these programmes come to life! The Specialist Education Partnership is just one of many - reach out to get involved! #raisingaspirations #valuesmatter
In 2023 we gave evidence to the UK House of Lords Public Services Committee inquiry into the transition from education to employment for young disabled people and earlier this year we hosted the committee at our wonderful site at Barts Health NHS Trust. Today, the committee has released their report: Think Work First: The transition from education to work for young disabled people. The report pivots supported internships as a vital part of the solution to bridging the disability employment gap and getting young disabled people into work with 3 of the first 10 recommendations pertaining to supported internships! In summary the Public Services Committed concluded: 🔸 Supported internships are an effective way to support people furthest from the job market to gain experience of the workplace and enter the workforce. They also provide effective support for employers to address cultural and practical barriers to employing disabled people. 🔸The Government should honour the commitment of the previous Government to double the number of supported internships and should take steps to ensure that as many young disabled people as possible are eligible for them. 🔸The Government should take steps to increase the number of supported internships, and should introduce ambitious, time-bound rolling targets for this. Building on the success of supported internships in NHS Trusts, the campaign should include targeted work to increase public sector uptake of supported internships. We are thrilled with the outcome and look forward to the The Labour Party Government’s response to this report. 👉 You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eW7HMPwd #internshipswork

What better way to celebrate the start of a new term with our official 1 year anniversary! So a heartfelt and HUGE thanks to all of our brilliant colleagues across the sector for all your support, referrals and guidance along the way. Over the last 12 months, we have completed 5 hugely successful curriculum and leadership transformation projects - 2 for GFE colleges, 1 for a large regional charity and 2 for small independent training providers. All brilliant teams with heart, passion and commitment to improving their provision for learners with high needs - such rewarding work and a great reminder of how many inspirational people there are in our education world. We've also been working hard to develop our 'everyday' work of advocacy, training and coaching services - this is slowly growing and keeping us motivated to find new and exciting ways to reach out across the post-16 sector. If you are interested in any support in these areas, please drop us an email at specialisteducationpartnership@gmail.com or direct message on LinkedIn. Here's to a brilliant Autumn term! #education #inclusionmatters #raisingaspirations

Many headlines are now starting to appear from today's King's speech, but (as always), the most interesting points are often hidden amongst the detail. Whilst some of the suggestions broadly make sense, there are huge red flags here - not least the naming of this tracking process as a 'truant register' - feels such a retrograde step and so far removed from understanding and tackling the real causes of persistent absences from school. We are really hoping there's a lot more to come on this before it is rolled out in law...writing to the new education secretary is next on our list!

So much of this article resonates - brilliantly clear and well worth a read. After today's vote, we will be watching closely to see how a new government (whatever it looks like) will tackle these challenges and bring meaningful change to the systems we work in. In the past 6 months alone, the already high demand for our advocacy services have tripled and this trend seems to be replicated in every organisation we work with. Our job now is to find better ways forward and always, to stay optimistic! #send #policy #change https://lnkd.in/eHSYcyYW

Today's clickbait headlines on the government's revised RHSE guidance are not to be feared...conversations about sex education and gender identity with all its nuance will not in reality be lost or 'banned'. What is a concern is yet another example of the lack of trust in teachers to make decisions about their approach to the mandated curriculum... https://lnkd.in/eGf5K6fE

We have just submitted our response to the DfE consultation on the proposed new standards for Personal, Social and Employability Qualifications...have you responded yet? If not, there is just under a month for colleagues to get their thoughts recorded and ensure the next generation of learners are not disadvantaged by reforms that do not meet their needs. If you or your teams want to discuss further, get in touch at specialisteducationpartnership@gmail.com https://lnkd.in/eivrPj9V

Over the past few months, we have been working with 3 different partners to support and build programmes that improve employment outcomes for people with autism - focusing on different plans for different people, developing resilience within a range of employment sectors and helping people feel confident to self-advocate. Great timing to coincide with the publication of the long awaited Buckland Review - here in accessible format and ready to share! A must-read for anyone working in education and employment support. https://lnkd.in/ecu43DMt

22% of the UK population are disabled - and as this action plan so clearly sets out, there is still a significant amount of work to be done across all areas of society to ensure the experiences of those with disabilities are equitable and positive. Whilst we are pleased to see such a wide variety of suggested actions, there are still many questions - do these actions reach far enough? How will they be implemented in reality? How can the impact of those actions linked to climate and resilience policy be measured? Setting a reminder for 3 months' time to review what progress has been made - and truly hoping the pace of decision-making is much faster than what we are seeing with the SEND Improvement Plan... https://lnkd.in/eFiF5kdv
