Protecting Sumatran orangutans, their forests and their future.

About us

Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered and without urgent action could be the first Great Ape species to become extinct. SOS is dedicated to turning this situation around. We do this by: Raising awareness about the importance of protecting orangutans and their rainforest home. Supporting grassroots projects which empower local people to become guardians of the rainforests Restoring damaged orangutan habitat through tree planting programmes. Campaigning on issues threatening the survival of orangutans in the wild. Help us protect orangutans, their forests and their future.

Updates

  • Orangutans, and other primates, are amazing creatures deserving protection in their own right. Yet the scientific community is divided on what this means. The debate around great apes and personhood has renewed focus, as the "Great Apes Law" is discussed in the Spanish parliament. Let us know what you think. Should great apes have the same rights as humans? #ScienceSaturday

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! With 7 hours to go, you incredible people helped us reach our Big Give target of £100,000! 🤯 405 supporters have made 413 donations over the past week to make this the most successful Big Give ever for Sumatran Orangutan Society. We know these aren’t the easiest times in which to donate, so every pound donated is all the more meaningful. We're overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation! 🙏 So, to everyone who’s given, whether it’s £1 or £1000, to all our pledgers and to our match-funders, to everyone who has spread the word, this week and before, about the need to protect wild orangutans, we want to say: Thank you! 🦧💚

  • Only 24 hours left in our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge. ⏰ A donation of £50 could be doubled to £100, enough to plant 100 fast-growing trees in a rewilding site, which could be a nesting spot for orangutans in just 3 years. Why donate? Why now? Orangutan conservation is not just about preserving their species—it’s about protecting the entire rainforest ecosystem that is so crucial to maintaining a balanced and healthy climate. There are fewer than 14,000 Sumatran and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans remaining in the wild. Without urgent action, we risk losing these incredible creatures and the diverse rainforest ecosystems they help sustain. Remember, every donation is doubled until 12 noon tomorrow! If you want to help protect orangutans, biodiversity, forest-edge communities and the global climate – now is the time to donate! ⏰ Donate now ➡️ https://ow.ly/pWwC50UgxB1

  • Less than 48 hours to go in our #ChristmasChallenge! 🤞 Today, let’s take a closer look at why the rainforests of North Sumatra are so vital. 🐯 Sumatra's rainforests are a treasure trove of biodiversity! From majestic orangutans to elusive tigers, these forests are home to some of the most amazing creatures on the planet (many of which are found nowhere else). 🏘️ North Sumatra’s rainforests are also vital to the many millions of people who live here - they act as watersheds, absorbing huge amounts of rainfall, reducing the risks of floods, landslides, and soil erosion. 🌍The rainforests are also critical carbon sinks helping to combat the effects of climate change. These are just a few things that make Sumatra’s rainforests so special. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated so far. Please help us reach our target! 💚 Please donate now! ➡️ https://ow.ly/pWwC50UgxB1

  • We’ve reached 50% of our £100,000 target! 🤯 Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. This is a huge milestone, but there’s still more to do. Your generosity fuels conservation action on the ground, where we team up with locally-based frontline partners to protect wild orangutans! 🧡 Thanks to your support, our partners are able to bring forests back to life by planting trees that provide orangutans with food and nesting spots. They’re also connecting forest areas by building canopy bridges and creating pathways, ensuring safe, continuous spaces for orangutans to move and thrive. Please donate now! Donations are matched until midday on 10 December ➡️ https://ow.ly/pWwC50UgxB1

  • Your gift will have twice the impact for orangutans—but only until 12 noon on 10th December. A donation of £50 could be doubled to £100, enough to plant 100 fast-growing trees in a rewilding site, which could be a nesting spot for orangutans in just 3 years. Orangutans once thrived across Sumatra but now fewer than 14,000 Sumatran and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans remain in the wild. Without urgent action, we risk losing these incredible creatures and the diverse rainforest ecosystems they help sustain. 💚 By donating today, you will support vital work to protect, connect and rewild the rainforest habitats that wild orangutans and so many other species rely on. Double Your Donation➡️ https://ow.ly/pWwC50UgxB1
