Our beloved two-year-old brown bear, Boki, has made history as the first brown bear on record to undergo life-saving brain surgery. Boki was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition where fluid builds up in the brain. His seizures had worsened, and with medication no longer controlling his symptoms, it became clear that surgery was needed to ensure his survival through the winter. A pioneering five-hour surgery took place here at Wildwood Trust yesterday, Wednesday 9th October, led by world-renowned veterinary surgeon Romain Pizzi. Using cutting-edge keyhole surgery, a stent was carefully fitted between Boki’s brain and abdomen to help drain the excess fluid. Boki was anaesthetised and carefully monitored by our incredible vet team, led by Elliott Simpson-Brown from IZVG. Our dedicated team at Wildwood assisted our 125kg bear to the operating table, where the procedure was performed. Boki is not out of the woods yet. The next few days and weeks will be crucial to his recovery. Wildwood Trust is committed to giving Boki, and all the animals in our care, the best chance for a healthy, happy life and enriched life. By donating today, you ensure that Wildwood Trust can keep fighting for wildlife and making a lasting impact. https://lnkd.in/e_Q6NXA9 🎥 Harding-Lee Media

"As cognition shapes animals’ responses to changing environments, cognitive research is increasingly recognised as a key component of conservation. This PhD project aims to use behavioural and cognitive principles to enhance reintroduction attempts of Britain’s most endangered corvid, the red-billed chough, Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax. Working with an interdisciplinary supervisory team of cognitive biologists and conservationists (including CASE partners Wildwood Trust, coordinators of the chough reintroduction scheme in Kent), the project will incorporate controlled experiments, behavioural observations and population monitoring on up to 80 captive and released choughs in Kent and Cornwall."
