"My World Came Down with the Ceiling" For many care workers, the cost of living crisis has brought unimaginable challenges. Tomek, a senior care worker from Aylesbury, is one of those individuals who gives his all to make life better for others, but found himself in desperate need of help. “My job is tough but rewarding,” Tomek explains. “I help bring independence to people and make their life a little easier.” Tomek lives with his wife and their four young children. Like many families, they have had to make sacrifices due to rising costs. One of those sacrifices was not renewing their home insurance. “It was expensive, and we had never needed to make a claim,” Tomek shared. “It felt like the right decision at the time, but I couldn’t have known what was coming.” Five months later, disaster struck. A burst pipe flooded the loft, causing the ceiling to collapse in his twins’ bedroom. The damage was severe—two beds, mattresses, bedding, and carpet were ruined. “I just couldn’t believe it. Water was everywhere, and we weren’t insured. Trying to save money had put me in an even worse position. The kids had no beds, and I felt completely helpless.” Unsure where to turn, Tomek applied for a grant from The Care Workers’ Charity. Without the grant, he feared he’d have to resort to a payday loan, which would have worsened his financial struggles. Thanks to the support of The Care Workers’ Charity, Tomek received the funds needed to replace the beds and bedding for his children. “It was so stressful. I work hard to provide for my family, but this made me feel so helpless.
