So, what’s been lurking behind the windows in your Advent Calendar? 🎄 The HR World is sadly just about old enough to remember when the standard calendar would simply offer up a small picture of a wintery/Christmas scene – a reindeer munching on hay, a family gathered around a Christmas tree, a young man carrying presents home, trying not to think of the credit card bill he’d be spending the best part of the New Year paying off… Back then (not that long ago, honest) calendars featuring chocolate were few and far between, but now you’re hard pressed to find one that doesn’t offer some kind of daily moulded yuletide confectionary. And despite the apparent offer of choice – Advent Calendars themed around Snowmen, Where’s Wally and Dinosaurs(?) – it’s somewhat disappointing to find the same daily moulded yuletide confectionary behind each window. Same chocolates, different packaging. Is that really diversity in action? A couple of years ago, The HR World was among those impacted by ‘Chocolony-gate’ when Tony's Chocolonely Advent Calendar featured an empty window. Pushing back against the tirade of disappointed customers (some now facing the rest of Advent placating disappointed children with mini Mars bars) the company said it was using this window to tell the story of the chocolate industry: “an industry unequally divided and choc-full of inequality". Appropriate messaging for the time? Misjudged stunt? Anything to do with Christmas? Masterful reverse thinking marketing exercise? The HR World, (washing todays’ chocolate down with strong coffee and finally finding Wally’s hat) is still not certain. Christmas comes but once a year, and when it does it brings an awful lot of potential messaging and opportunities to remember/be aware of others etc.etc. and treading the path between beliefs, expectations and so forth is never going to be easy. For this reason, The HR World is particularly wishing you the best over the next two weeks of the season of celebration and togetherness. By the way, if you need a break from your Christmas concerns, we’re still running two more webinars before the holidays kick in.
