Education

We build radical interdisciplinary programmes that centre, platform and celebrate young Black voices.

About us

Thinking Black builds radical programmes of educational engagement, where young Black people have the mentorship and resources to build critical responses to society’s most pressing questions. Since 2017, our Afro-Caribbean Tyler Essay Prize has facilitated critical black thought among young people. Through teaching, mentoring and coaching, we have exposed over 150 state school students to a variety of Black academics, thinkers and artists. We've gone on to reward their engagement with questions that are critically relevant to their lives as young Black British people. Since, we have been developing a series of programmes aimed at young Black people of different ages. From year 8 to year 12, we engage Black students in various expressive mediums, including creative writing, public speaking, critical thinking and formal essay writing. Our students will walk away with a portfolio of work, armed with the knowledge, confidence and skills to enter and disrupt academic spaces. Thinking Black is generously supported by the Tyler Trust and Pembroke College, Oxford. We actively looking for further partners and sponsors to build upon and expand our programmes in the Autumn of 2020 and beyond. We want to engage more Black students, giving them the resources to make successful applications and meet the required grades for entry.
