Apt is an architectural practice underpinned by a creative and collaborative approach. We create architecture that inspires through great design, innovation and craftsmanship. We work as a collective in a transparent and logical way. We do not have a ‘house’ style and look at every project afresh; creating desirable places to live and work that are richly detailed and diverse in character, celebrating the culture, customs and heritage of their setting, reinforcing a sense of identity and place. From our studio in the heart of London’s design district we work across several sectors including housing, commercial, heritage, arts and community projects of all shapes and sizes across London and the UK. This is Apt.

So lovely to be greeted this morning by Rana's 'No. 1272 Chainlink'. A modified version of her contribution to Life Is More Important Than Art, an exhibition last year at Whitechapel Gallery, 'No. 1272 Chainlink' comprises ten suspended sheets of chainlink fencing – each 2400 mm long, five red, five blue, in overlapping rows at 500 mm intervals. Through diagonally aligned grids, we see the colours mix not only with each other, but also with the visual features of the space that they occupy. Truly mesmerising. A huge thanks to everyone who joined us, and to Rana Begum and Jonathan Watkins for last night's launch! A wonderful evening to round off the 2024 #MakingSpace art series. #ThisisApt

Last week we saw the first two Sky Gardens in place at our 2 Trafalgar Way scheme for urbanest UK. These balconies complete the expressive form of the spandrel banding, and once planted, will provide a green spine rising the full height of the two main towers. 2 Trafalgar Way is designed to be the tallest #Passivhaus residential scheme in Europe, with three towers of 28, 36 and 46 storeys providing 1,672 student beds and 80 residential apartments. A four-storey podium will include 43,000 sq.ft. commercial office space, including workspace for local business start-ups. Within each student cluster on every floor, the kitchen & dining spaces all benefit from natural daylight, and are provided with visual amenity overlooking the vertical Sky Gardens that adorn the building façades, and support an ambitious approach to urban greening. #ThisisApt urbanest UK JRL Group Ltd ASFD | Engineered Design
With one week to go, Apt are delighted to present the final exhibition in our 2024 #MakingSpace Series, by acclaimed artist Rana Begum. The visual impact is spellbinding. Born in Bangladesh in 1977, Rana Begum lives and works in London. In 1999, Begum graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, and in 2002 gained an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art. We are really looking forward to the NLA #NewLondonAwards2024 tomorrow! We are grateful for the nomination of two fantastic workplace schemes; Hill House and The Earnshaw. The transformational plans for Hill House will deliver an exciting mixed-use destination, with a prominent new home for Shoe Lane Library. Sixteen floors of state-of-the-art office space with dedicated landscaped terraces will be created in the heart of the City as well as a stunning new rooftop restaurant with spectacular views of the capital, Hill House is environmentally responsible and has ambitious targets to be fully net zero carbon with almost 60% of the existing structure retained and no new foundations required, resulting in a significant embodied carbon saving and less disruption to neighbours. There is a huge increase in biophilic diversity through extensive urban greening in the form of a unique urban forest cascading from the top of the building. Shoe Lane Library’s long-term future will be secured and its facilities will be reimagined and improved, with ground floor accessibility, civic presence and dedicated use of the rooftop space for special events. Visitors will also enjoy natural light and views overlooking an enhanced Gunpowder Square. The modern space responds to community feedback and supports the City’s libraries vision. There will also be flexible space that can be used for collaboration, events and cultural activities. Connected to the Library, a flexible workspace will serve the community, small businesses, start-ups, and freelancers. The newly landscaped Gunpowder Square with planting and trees will help achieve a biodiversity increase of 532% creating a greener, more attractive public realm for visitors to enjoy. Hill House will strengthen the City of London’s status as a fantastic place to work, live and visit, attracting commuters and visitors into the district seven days a week. The Earnshaw is a highly contextual architectural response to a complex site. Providing nine storeys of exemplary office accommodation above ground floor retail, the scheme has been developed with a focus on the wellbeing of its occupants. A daylit circulation stair connects lift lobbies, whilst numerous external terraces are accessed from the floorplates. The Earnshaw represents the latest thinking in best-in-class office buildings, incorporating smart technology and #WELLBuildingStandard© Platinum, #BREEAM Outstanding and Net Zero Carbon (operation) as well as WIRED and SMART score. Sitting between the well-established London neighbourhoods of Soho, Bloomsbury and Covent Garden, the ground floor of the building is designed to be engaging, permeable and animated on all sides. #ThisisApt

We continue to be filled with pride that 1 New Street Square won the TEST OF TIME award at the BCO Awards 2024. The building, home to Deloitte since 2019, was the largest building in the world to achieve WELL Certified Gold and the first building to achieve WELL Certification and BREEAM dual certification. The 280,000 sq ft 15 storey building’s quality design gives stunning views over St. Paul’s through the large curved glass apexes (photo 2 shows the install of these pieces). We are extremely proud, and know this building will continue to stand the test of time for years to come. Congratulations again to all involved.
