We have published our pilot Online Learning Rankings 2024 – the first attempt to measure online learning on a global basis. Unlike other THE rankings that use rank position and scores, the OLR 2024 groups institutions into three categories: gold, silver and bronze. Fifty-six universities across 28 countries or territories gain one of these awards, while a further 64 institutions are listed as reporters. Demand for online learning has exploded in recent years, but there is no global standard on how to measure the teaching quality of higher education delivered online - let alone agreement on the definition of online learning. While the results and the underlying data provide interesting insights, they also contribute to an important global conversation about how best to assess and understand online learning. There is growing consensus that the world’s most pressing problems can be solved only by big-picture research that draws on a variety of disciplines. But how can universities foster such interdisciplinary working? Times Higher Education's Rosa Ellis spoke to Thomas F. Hofmann, the president of one of the world's top-ranked universities for interdisciplinary science, Technical University of Munich, about how to break down disciplinary silos and help cross-disciplinary collaboration to flourish. “What holds back some professors from going into collaboration is they say: ‘If I only do this, I lose my performance measures in my discipline.
