“Do not think that world-class higher education delivered in the UK means that we have a God-given right to continue to be a top recruiter… “We are seeing our position eroded so we have to find new ways of getting to students.” So said David Pilsbury, chief development officer at Oxford International Education Group, at Jisc’s Data Matters conference this week. Also speaking at the conference in Manchester, Janet B. Ilieva, founder of the Education Insight consultancy, said global student flows have changed significantly since the coronavirus pandemic. “In the next few decades, global mobility will continue to be shaped by the two most prominent players, which are China and India, however there are some significant changes in terms of student decision-making,” she said. Chinese families are more price sensitive, shifting their preferences away from the West. “What we are seeing is a growing number of students choose to study in a country that’s much nearer to their home, so intra-regional mobility is likely to shape the future of international student mobility.” What do you think? It was a humbling privilege to meet with Dr. Yevhen Kudriavets, Ukraine's First Deputy Minister of Education and Science (pictured) and his colleagues Daria Bovkun and Marharyta Yakymenko from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The education system that Dr Kudriavets presides over is the epitome of resiliance and agility. Ukraine has now entered its third year of full-scale war, with one-in-seven schools destroyed or damaged by the start of 2024, and over 1.8 million students denied access to in-person education. And yet the education system continues to operate under these extraordinary circumstances. We are delighted that Dr Kudriavets will be joining us at the Education World Forum in London in May so we can together learn from how he has embraced educational innovation and strategic international relationships to ensure we can re-build Ukraine, one classroom at a time. He shared some excellent ideas with myself and EWF colleagues Mahyar Rahmantalab, Dominic Savage and Fabrizio Trifirò about how to maximise the impact of the EWF. Watch this space. What an energizing and inspiring meeting today with Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The minister is one of the most bold I've met in seeking to ensure Artificial Intelligence is fully integrated into teaching and learning across the nation, challenging the "conservatism" inherent in so much of higher education. He has seen real success in attracting a wide range of international university partners to deliver Trans-national Education across the nation - and in opening up Kazakhstan as a genuinely experimental "sandbox" for the latest technological innovations in education. I'm delighted to join the Ministry's international advisory council - a unique and bold forum for open dialogue and collaborative decision-making, in support of Kazakhstan's impressive emergence as a global hub for higher education. The minister, and a delegation of Kazakh universities, joined me at Times Higher Education's London headquarters, to discuss the burgeoning Study in Kazakhstan campaign with THE's lead brand and reputation expert Vicky Irwin (FCIM) (pictured) and our TNE expert consultants, Ishan Cader (pictured) and Boris Remes. Lachyn Italmazova and Yemi Adeshiyan joined to firm up our exciting plans for events in Astana in the coming months and years. We are also delighted that Fabrizio Trifirò (pictured far left) programme director for the Education World Forum was there to help ensure the Kazakhstan ministerial delegation makes the most of the Forum in London in May. #EWF25
