Read our latest blog - all about sharing our report on flexible working in the childcare sector with Early Years experts... via Nicola Pease
🤯 4 in 10 early years educators leave the sector for good, in favour of jobs that offer better pay and flexibility. Could 'tweaks' to working patterns help solve this recruitment and retention crisis? We debated this and more, when we held a packed event in Westminster, with the support of the Early Education and Childcare Coalition to launch our new report: Building the Early Years and Childcare Workforce of the Future. JPMorganChase supported us to be able to look at the challenges to work life balance in the sector, and test out more flexible working schedules. Our thanks to London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) and the Early Years Alliance for their support, too. Early years providers, experts, policymakers and local and national government representatives all gathered, to share positive ideas and collaborate ‘what works’ in terms of building a better work life balance for early years educators in childcare settings across the UK - all with the needs of children placed front and centre of our thinking. Really lovely to see our work described in these terms. Thank you Simon Long
Pleased to end the week on a positive note. While some organisations are rolling back on their flexible working commitments (for reasons that utterly escape me), others are steaming ahead. And they include Wickes. If you want an example of an organisation that's committed to giving their site-based, service-facing teams greater levels of input and control over their working patterns, read this article: https://lnkd.in/ep7V_-tp Louise Tait and her colleagues see flexibility as key to attract and retain talent. Importantly, enabling career mobility within the organisation by widening access to flexibility for store managers. And, they have the evidence to show it's working well, for their people and the organisation. It's been great to have played a small part in their flexible journey with Timewise. #FlexibleWorking #SocialMobility #GoodWork #Inclusion

It's always great to spend time with people that are focused on solutions, so the Early Education and Childcare Coalition was delighted to co-host a private roundtable with Timewise today on how to make flexible working work in the early years. The #ChildcarePioneers report by the brilliant team at Timewise finds that over 17,000 staff could be recruited through increased flexible working - half the number required to meet the demand created by the expansion of the new entitlements. This supports our own research with University of Leeds last year which found that almost all of those who had recently left the sector would return under the right conditions. We heard from settings about how to manage multiple requests for flexibility and, critically, how to maintain consistency for children. But above all else, important reminders from Neil Leitch and June O'Sullivan OBE about the absolute necessity of supporting the wellbeing of the early years workforce. Thanks to those settings that took up our invitation to join the conversation, as well as coalition partners and colleagues at the Department for Education for joining. How do we tackle the big divide between the flexible haves and have nots? Refreshing to see some practical recommendations for flexible working on the frontline at Timewise's roundtable today. It's far from easy, but their two year pilot has shown that flex is do-able even in over-stretched and under-resourced childcare settings, with huge implications for staff recruitment and retention. Our own research at Young Women's Trust highlights the critical importance of flexible working to young women, many of whom are flexible ‘have nots’ in the care, retail and education sectors. As Timewise’s flex pilots have shown in a wide range of workplaces, practical initiatives such as more staff-led rostering, changes to job design, supportive HR teams and skilling up line managers makes some level of flex possible for everyone. The report highlighted that while we need to take as much care of the staff as we do of the children we also need to ignite a deeply philosophical conversation about the role of #care in society. This conversation needs to start with pregnancy, small children and go all the way to old people. Care is the glue that holds a compassionate society together. We cannot keep pushing policies to resolve political positions without addressing the underpinning philosophy that will create the cultural norms that will see the policies succeed for everyone. The number of over 65s in work has risen since the early 2000s and more than doubled among women, a new study has found. Those aged 50-64 years old were also more likely to be working, with 78% of men and 69% of women economically active versus 74% and 58% 20 years ago. Interestingly, the numbers of women over 50 working part-time have been declining, while the numbers of men doing so - are rising. Episode 5 of our podcast, 'Part-time Works' is all about how good part-time work can transform lives and change your path. One of our guests, Professor Richard Lanyon-Hogg, talks about how part-time work has enabled him to spend more time with his grandchildren, undertake a 'self-renovation' and also pursue his love for the natural world, through an incredible sustainability project he runs in Wales. Please do take a listen. It's a reminder that, with longer lives stretching before us, anyone will be more than just one 'thing', and how part-time working can sometimes allow for that vital exploration, and discovery. https://lnkd.in/eukmbJtq #NationalOlderWorkersWeek #Timewise #PhoenixInsights

What we've been up to lately... ... with thanks to the excellent Astrid Allen.
Something fantastic happened to me last week! I got to share a stage with flexible working vanguards, Louise Tait and Amy Butterworth, to present Institute for Employment Studies findings on flexible working in sectors with frontline and site based roles. It was the culmination of years of work, supported by Helen Buttery, Claire Ogden MCIPD and colleagues at Wickes, Gemma Smith FCIPD, Laura Khan and colleagues at Sir Robert McAlpine, Paula Boughtflower, ANDREA WILLIAMS-MCKENZIE CBE and colleagues at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, Sarah Dauncey, PhD, Emma Stewart MBE and Claire Campbell FCIPD at Timewise and my wonderful colleagues, including Billy Campbell, Claudia Plowden Roberts, Daniel Lucy, Meenakshi Krishnan, PhD and Tony Wilson. I talked about the business benefits and, more importantly, the critical success factors - how to deliver flexible working benefits in every organisation. I also met some amazing people (Zerena Sobhee, Rachel Wilkinson, Orla Donoghue, Roxanne Anderson, Gemma Harvey, Esther Bennett, Joselyn Some Kanyua, Heledd Kendrick, Lena Chauhan, Emma Cleary, Liane Richardson to name a few) and heard inspirational stories of what they are doing to promote inclusivity. Thanks again to Ursula Tavender and Madeleine Cole for the opportunity to present and for putting on such a fantastic conference on The Inclusive Workplace. See you next year! #flexibleworking #equality #diversity #inclusion
