🌟 Shaping the Future of NHS Care 🌟 The Change NHS consultation was a welcome opportunity to share our thoughts on how the NHS can evolve to meet the needs of communities. By focusing on prevention, technology, and community-based care, the government is looking to tackle some of the biggest challenges in health. We emphasised that physical activity needs to be part of the solution; supporting better health, building connections, and reducing the strain on services. But we were also very clear that community organisations must play a central role in these changes. Their deep understanding of local need and trusted relationships with communities make them essential partners in delivering care and supporting prevention. For this to work, they need proper, long-term investment and to be treated as equal contributors, not afterthoughts. This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we’re highlighting the need for truly inclusive physical activity. In Staffordshire, over 164,000 people identify as disabled, yet many still face barriers to moving more and living well. It doesn’t have to be this way. We’ve pulled together a list of fantastic local clubs and groups already making a difference; from Stoke City FC's Aiming High sessions to adapted skiing with Disability Snowsports UK. One of our core values is Being Inclusive. We actively promote diversity and inclusion, advocating for underrepresented voices and accessibility in all our work. But we can’t be fully inclusive without embedding another “I” into it - intersectionality. Last week at our team meeting we discussed how we can make sure that different voices and perspectives from our community are included in our planning and decision making and what we could be doing to make sure we’re considering all parts of a person’s life in our work: all through an intersectional lens. For many in our focus communities and those who face barriers to accessing physical activity, the challenges are rarely one-dimensional. People who belong to more than one marginalised group often experience compounded inequalities, which we need to understand and address. Intersectionality reminds us that it’s not just about individual barriers but about the systems that disadvantage people based on multiple layers of their identity.   As a team, we explored ways to deepen this approach, like creating lived experience panels to hear directly from communities about the unique challenges they face. We’re also working with partners to ensure they incorporate intersectionality, seeing the people they support not as monolithic groups but as individuals with distinct stories and needs. This way, we can design out inactivity in a way that genuinely leaves no person or group behind.

We’re supporting the NCVO and ACEVO ’s call to recognize the crucial role charities play in keeping communities resilient. The announcement this week of increased employer National Insurance Contributions adds a big new cost to the charity sector, estimated at £1.4 billion a year, just as charities are stretching every penny to meet rising needs in our communities.   While we agree with increasing employer NIC to allow for increased investment in public services, the approach is currently too broad. With services already under pressure, the NIC rise could mean that funds set aside by charities for direct community support now have to go to covering this unexpected cost. This translates to tough choices: scaling back services, reducing staff, or even turning people away.    At Together Active, we know the strength of communities is built on continuity and trust, which comes from reliable support and relationships, not from services being cut.   Public sector organisations are receiving NIC relief, which we support. But charities should be given the same consideration.    Charities exist to support communities every day, delivering essential services that step in when other systems can’t keep up.
