Our Red Dot award-winning design for FXI offers a radically better alternative to current FFP3 respirators, which tend to fit badly and are uncomfortable to wear for extended periods - especially during surgical procedures. The novel design combines a soft silicone facepiece with a large filter surface area - providing an excellent seal while making it much easier to breathe and communicate. Semi-transparent materials reveal more of the wearer’s face and help patients feel at ease, whilst the patented nanoparticle filter creates an absolute barrier to pathogens, toxins and environmental agents. The construction makes the filter extremely easy to replace and to disassemble parts at the end of life, while the unique, considered design aesthetic is a refreshing contrast to other products on the market. The product went through multiple rounds of prototyping, sampling and user testing in clinical environments. With production-ready design and manufacturing partners in place, X-Mask is now on its way to commercialisation. If you have a healthcare design project you’d like to discuss, we’d love to hear from you.  #PPEInnovation #HealthcareDesign #Sustainability

Tone wins a Red Dot design award! Red Dot is one of the world’s largest design competitions, and one of the most well recognised. The Red Dot badge is recognition of outstanding achievement in product design, so we’re absolutely delighted to see our hard work on FXI's X-Mask win this year’s award. We designed the X-Mask to offer a superior alternative to current FFP3 respirators, utilising our client FXI’s patented nanoparticle filter technology. Usability, comfort, manufacture cost and sustainability were paramount throughout and balancing these required in depth research, design iteration and testing. We designed specifically around the needs of doctors and surgeons, but ended up with a product that offers significant benefits for any industry. If you have a product idea you’d like to talk about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. #productdesign #reddot #designinnovation

As sustainability becomes a top priority for businesses and increasingly a legislative requirement, where should we turn as designers to make the biggest difference? While biodegradable materials offer some circularity with their disposal, many biodegradable materials require specific conditions, such as industrial composting facilities with controlled temperatures, moisture, and microbial activity, to properly decompose. However, this is changing as new material innovations come on the market. Recycling helps us to make the most of material that already exists and is, at least in the short term, helping to avoid waste going to landfill. No matter the material choice, however, the simple act of reusing products for as long as possible should be a big part of the answer. Companies like our awesome client Recirculate Systems Limited are leading the way, building both software and hardware to underpin the circular economy. We’ve been working together designing, building, testing and iterating some very exciting technology to make circularity as fast as, and cheaper than, disposal. We’ll be sharing more over the coming months. Watch this space! #circulareconomy #sustainabledesign #reuse

No matter what the sector, the importance of product packaging can’t be understated. It is often a customer’s first physical interaction with the product and has to communicate, enhance, delight, and protect. But when it comes to medical and health, there’s an opportunity for packaging to play an even greater role – to form part of the very product itself. In our recent work for Malebox, a comprehensive at-home male fertility testing kit, the packaging was fundamentally important in ensuring that samples are collected correctly and transported safely back to the lab. However, as a direct-to-customer product, brand perception was also critical. So we designed an intuitive and premium packaging experience, whilst also working closely with Malebox to meet strict requirements for temperature control and structural protection. Packaging design plays a critical role in the success of all products, but when it comes to health it has the opportunity to reduce risk, and enhance the patient experience. #PackagingDesign #MedicalDesign #UserExperience

This makes all the hard work worth it! Read what EnMovi had to say about our work on the MotionSense 2.0 wearable, a remote monitoring device that helps patients during their knee replacement recovery. It's always great to hear feedback from our clients, and comments like this motivate us to keep pushing the boundaries of design and innovation. If you'd like to talk about how we might be able to work together, don’t hesitate to get in touch. #industrialdesign #designconsultancy #medicaldesign

Over 500 million people worldwide struggle with chronic respiratory problems. Yet shockingly, current dry powder inhalers deliver a relatively small proportion of the drug to the lung, reducing their effectiveness. That’s why we are thrilled to share our work for Cambridge Healthcare Innovations on the Quattrii™ Dry Powder Inhaler. Using Cambridge Healthcare Innovation’s technology and a new physical body design that promotes proper usage, the Quattrii™ DPI has the potential to enable brand-new drug therapies and improve health outcomes for people worldwide. At Tone, we are committed to advancing healthcare solutions and creating happier, healthier lives by design. It was a pleasure working with CHI on this important project and look forward to seeing their continued success. Read more about CHI's innovative technologies on their website.
