Building the Corolla Hatchback and Touring Sports and engines for the UK and the World out of Burnaston and Deeside
About us
Toyota's decision to establish a manufacturing operation in Europe was announced in 1989 and Toyota Manufacturing UK was established in December that year. There are two manufacturing plants in the UK representing a total investment in excess of £2.75 billion and currently approximately 3,000 members (including Agency) are employed. The vehicle manufacturing plant is located at Burnaston in Derbyshire, the engine manufacturing plant is located at Deeside in North Wales. The processes at Burnaston include stamping, welding, painting, plastic mouldings and assembly and at Deeside machining, assembly and aluminium casting. The first car, a Carina E, drove off the Burnaston production line on 16 December 1992. The Avensis replaced the Carina E in 1997 and in 2008 the third generation Avensis was launched. In 1998 a second model, the Corolla, was introduced and in 2001 the new generation Corolla was launched. In 2007, production of Auris, a new Toyota hatchback, started replacing Corolla. Production of the Auris Hybrid, the first full mass-produced hybrid in Europe, began in 2010. Toyota is the leading company for hybrid vehicle development, and the new Corolla with its Touring Sports variant is the future of TMUK – the first model to introduce Toyota’s dual hybrid strategy, replaced the Auris when it started to roll off our production lines in January 2019. Last week saw the celebration of the production of our 5 millionth vehicle here at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK in Burnaston, UK. The milestone model is a Corolla GR Sport Hatchback hybrid, which rolled off the assembly line earlier this month. This achievement underscores Burnaston's role as a key player in Toyota’s European manufacturing network and the UK automotive sector. Since its founding in 1989, the plant has received over £2.82 billion in investment, ensuring it remains at the forefront of modern technologies and production methods. Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the start of works on Toyota’s new Anaerobic Digester at TMUK’s Deeside Engine Plant - Toyota Deeside holds significant event on journey towards zero carbon - An AD (Anaerobic Digester) will supply TMUK-D with 100% Biomethane and 100% electricity generated from waste from Q4 2025 - The biomethane will avoid the emissions of 2,900 tonnes of CO2 per year Deeside, UK – October 8, 2024 – Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a state-of-the-art anaerobic digester plant at the Toyota engine manufacturing facility based in Deeside, North Wales (UK) TMUK-D. This pivotal event on Toyota’s journey towards carbon zero, takes place on October 8, 2024, and marks the beginning of a significant project that will enable the Deeside plant to be at the forefront of carbon-zero manufacturing globally. The new waste to energy plant conceived and financed by D SPV, PWC and ABRDN and built by Bio Construct, will be situated next to the Engine Plant and construction will start next month on the £282 million privately funded venture. The waste to energy plant will supply TMUK-D with green electricity directly via an underground cable, replacing the current grid electricity supply. The waste to energy plant will take around 180,000 tonnes of waste each year and convert it to biomethane in a process called anaerobic digestion. This is a natural process where bacteria break down the waste and release biomethane, which is captured, processed and delivered by a pipeline directly to the engine plant. This biomethane will replace the natural gas supply avoiding the emissions of 2,900 tonnes of CO2 each year. As a by-product compost is produced which will be given to local farmers supporting the adoption of a circular economy in the local area. The Deeside facility, known for producing high-quality engines for Toyota vehicles, is set to lead the way in environmental innovation with this project. The new plant will not only allow the facility to stop the use of fossil fuel in its processes but will also serve as a model for sustainable manufacturing practices within Toyota. #toyota #sustainability

Great to see APMs (Battery Electric Accessible People Movers) being delivered on the back of a hydrogen powered truck in Paris last week. It’s about end to end thinking and Toyota’s Environmental strategy encompasses this. Additionally, teams from TMUK were instrumental in the manufacture and timely delivery of the APMs. Just one of the many ways in which TMUK has been supporting the road to the Games. https://lnkd.in/e7kpi6J9
💧 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐓𝐨𝐲𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐏𝐌𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 💧 🚛 As witnessed on the streets of Paris, Toyota is deploying a hydrogen-powered truck to transport some of the battery electric Accessible People Movers (APMs) for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. The truck emits zero tailpipe emissions while delivering APMs with the same planet-friendly profile. 💪 To achieve zero tailpipe emissions, French startup Hyliko retrofitted a diesel truck with two Toyota fuel cell modules. One such truck can carry up to three APMs at once, matching performance of a traditional diesel truck. Retrofit is also one of possible solutions to speeding up the energy transition. 🌊 By using hydrogen as the fuel source, these deliveries play a crucial role in achieving Paris 2024’s ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% compared to previous games. 🌐 At Toyota, we firmly believe that hydrogen-powered mobility is one of key players towards achieving climate neutrality. During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the retrofitted heavy-duty truck will be among at least ten hydrogen solutions showcasing how a variety of hydrogen-powered products and applications can help unlock the potential of this renewable energy source. #Paris2024 #Toyota #hydrogen #H2 #fuelcell #FCEV #BEV #carbonneutral
