Trafford is a thriving, diverse, prosperous, and culturally vibrant borough sitting at the heart of Greater Manchester.

About us

In 1974, Trafford Council was created to administer the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough. Trafford's centre of administration is Trafford Town Hall – named Stretford Town Hall before 1974 – designated a Grade II listed building in 2007. On its formation in 1974, the council was controlled by the Conservative Party; the Conservatives have been in control 1973–85, 1988–94, and 2004 to the present. The only time the Labour Party was in control was 1996–2002. The rest of the time were periods of no overall control. The council meets to decide policy and allocate budget. Its duties include setting levels of council tax, monitoring the health service in Trafford, providing social care, facilitating the local democratic process, ensuring clean and maintained neighbourhoods, and good local education. Trafford Council was assessed by the Audit Commission and judged to be "improving strongly" in providing services for local people. Overall the council was awarded "three star" status meaning it was "performing well" and "consistently above minimum requirements", similar to 46% of all local authorities. In 2008–09, Trafford council had a budget of £150.5 million. This was collected from council tax (57%) and government grants (43%). The council spent £31.8 million on children and young people's services (21%); £60.1 million on community services and social care (40%); £34.4 million on "prosperity, planning, and development" (23%); and £33.8 million on customer and corporate services (22%).

  • As we celebrate #16Days of Activism, we look back on our collaboration with GreaterSport and the Trafford Community Collective in supporting the Old Trafford, Stretford and Gorse Hill communities to reduce gendered violence; and to create and maintain safe spaces and a sense of belonging, to enable active and joyful lives. The Right to the Streets project in Trafford used community action and feminist approaches to tackle violence against women and girls at the root, rather than putting the emphasis on victims to change their behaviours and limit their freedoms. Through this work, we've secured funding to deliver a Policy Lab on tackling gender-based violence with eight other councils. Find out more about the Right to the Streets: https://ow.ly/XVGz50UfGPs

  • We're honoured to receive the Gold award in the Armed Forces Covenant Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for a second time. We're proud to help veterans in Trafford; to oversee important military services and parades including Remembrance, assist with funerals and work with local cadet units. The Covenant is a commitment to support members of the Armed Forces community, to help people like Garrie Stockley - pictured. Garrie served in the Royal Navy as a medical assistant for eight years, before joining Greater Manchester Police as a neighbourhood officer in Stretford. A serious injury later led him to use a wheelchair, causing a dramatic change in his life. Garrie, who is married with three children, said his mental health plummeted: “I was suicidal at points. But the Council offered support and help and put me in touch with folk.” We were able to find Garrie and his family more suitable social housing in Sale and introduced him to the Spearhead Foundation, which provides a social hub for ex-servicemen and women. Garrie has recently been asked to be a Trustee of the Foundation and regularly attends armed forces events. Talking about our Armed Forces Lead, Sue Wright, Garrie says: “I hit rock bottom with my mental health. Sue came along with ideas and contacts and really helped me. I might not be here today if it wasn’t for her support.” Garrie's story: https://ow.ly/7on450U9f4f
